CADIZ - Post 34 posted a split for the second straight day in the Beast of the East Baseball Tournament Saturday afternoon.
After getting drubbed 16-1 in four innings in their first game by Sports Zone Baseball Academy, Post 34 rebounded with a 13-3 thumping of NY Diamonds to cap pool play in the tournament.
Running thin on pitching, Post 34 had its rotation thrown into a flux when scheduled starter Rashaen Mitchell informed the coaching staff that he couldn't go due to arm pain.
Cadiz turned to Indian Creek's Dustin Rath, who suffered the loss in working two-and-a-third frames.
Sports Zone sent 13 hitters to the plate and scored eight runs in the second. They added three in the third and five more in the fourth before the game was stopped after that inning by a 15-run mercy rule.
Cadiz didn't help its cause in the field. It committed six errors and all told, Cadiz pitching walked five hitters.
Post 34 finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Mitchell, who started the game as the designated hitter and eventually played in the outfield, singled and scored on a base hit by Jonathan Borkoski.
Harrison Central product Dalton Rutter had two more hits for Post 34, including yet another bunt single.
That late offensive surge, which saw Cadiz leave the bases loaded that would have forced at least one additional inning, must have carried over to the second game.
In the second game, Bellaire High senior-to-be Spencer Badia worked the distance on the mound in earning the pitching victory.
Badia helped his own cause at the plate with two doubles, a single and three RBI.
Nick Pelegreen came up big with a triple, single and three RBI. Chase Hopkins had two singles and three RBI.
Borkoski drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Andrew Chlon and Nick Patrone each had two singles.
