I am writing this letter on behalf of my son who served 20 years in the US Navy, retired, and was honorably discharged and who I feel is entitled the Ohio Veterans Bonus Program.
He is being denied this bonus because he is not an Ohio resident now. The 20 years he was serving in the US Navy he paid Ohio State Income Tax. If Ohio was employment friendly, and had a lot of positions available when he was discharged he may still be in Ohio.
The Ohio Department of Veterans Services that is in charge of the Ohio Veterans Program is saying he is not eligible for this bonus because he is not a current resident of the state.
He served on the USS Midway, USS Eisenhower, the USS Teddy Roosevelt and was deployed in Desert Storm and five deployments to Iraq.
My statement to the Ohio Veterans Services is, how many more Ohio veterans that should be eligible for this bonus are you cheating out of it??????
The Times Leader had a nice write up about applying for the bonus but unfortunately they did not have all the stipulations that you need to have to receive such a small amount for putting their lives in harm's way.
It doesn't benefit you to write to your congressman either, they simply ignore you or call and say there is nothing they can do.
What happens to all the excess money set aside for the Veterans Bonus, if they are telling the veterans they are not eligible?
Our servicemen are sure getting bad representation from the Ohio Department of Veteran Services.
