TWO PERSONS, including a Clarington resident, died in accidents Thursday and this morning in Eastern Ohio.
Killed in a one-vehicle crash Thursday in Monroe County was Melvin T. Huffman, 52, Clarington. Information about the individual who reportedly died in a two-vehicle crash in Harrison County this morning was unavailable at press time.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol received the call about the Harrison County fatality this morning at 7:06. The two-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. 22 in the Cadiz area. It was on a two-lane portion of that highway, according to a spokesperson at the state patrol's Steubenville Post.
Details about the accident, which was near Milepost 22, were unavailable at press time because the patrol was still on the scene, investigating the crash.
A call about Thursday's accident was received by the patrol from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 9:13 p.m.
According to information from the patrol's St. Clairsville Post, Huffman was driving a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 westbound on Case Ridge Road near Clarington when it traveled off the left side of the road, struck a large tree and then a house. Huffman was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner's office. No one in the residence was injured.
The Clarington and Beallsville volunteer fire departments were at the scene.
Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor, according to the patrol.
Both accidents are under investigation.
