CONNORVILLE Steubenville Big Red defeated the home standing Buckeye Local Panthers in four sets 25-18, 25-9, 25-28 and 25-20 in OVAC volleyball action Monday evening.

It looked like the visitors were going to sweep their hosts after a quick second set, but Buckeye Local was not ready to concede the match.

"We lost our intensity level," said Big Red coach Lynn Meyer of the third game. "We had some errors, and we got down on ourselves. We have to learn to continue to play when we get ourselves into those situations."

"We were down tonight, but we are a better team than that," said first year Buckeye Local head coach Janelle Windsheimer who was a little disappointed in her Panthers. "When we show up to play as a team, we can compete, we are capable."

Buckeye Local took an early lead and looked like it was well on its way to winning the third set 19-14, but the Big Red came back to even the score at 20 apiece and the two battled on from there to a deadlock at 25.

The Panthers had missed opportunities with errors earlier in the contest but this time they pulled together for the 27-25 win.

The third set was to be another battle but the Big Red made plays when they counted and avoided the rubber match pulling away to take home the win.

"We had great passing tonight," Meyer complimented her squad. "We struggled at times at the net, so we still have some work to do."

Steubenville was paced by Taylor Young with 29 points off her jump serve, 11 kills and 17 assists. Abby Taylor served up 20 points, notched 13 spikes with 13 assists and four digs. Lysiah Rice added 16 points, six kills and two blocks, Brittany Bodo chipped in with seven points, six kills, four digs and two assists. Carmie Biasi worked the back court for the Big Red digging up 15 and serving 8 points.

Buckeye Local's Morgan Fedorko led her squad at the net with 11 kills, four points and two digs. Preslie Renforth notched seven points with three aces, six kills and six digs. Morgan Staten dug up 11, served up 8 points with one ace, added five spikes and three assists. Nicolette Devore set eight assists, had one kill and three points, Lexus Fedorko set 10 and had four points. Kierstyn Czuchran added four kills, six points and four digs for the Panthers.

The Big Red will face off against border rival Indian Creek tonight while Buckeye Local has a week off and will host Harrison Central next Tuesday.
