BETHESDA - Bill and Dorothy Skaggs are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary as well as Dorothy's 91st birthday anniversary today, Sept. 4. They were united in marriage in a Presbyterian church in Galveston, Texas during World War II while he was a Cadet in the Army Air Corps, stationed at Ellington Field. Bill was later promoted to Sergeant and served as a fire control specialist for the B29 Bombers.
Skaggs, son of the late Earl and Ruth Skaggs, upon his discharge at the end of the war, returned home and was employed as a life insurance agent in Bellaire with the Equitable Life Insurance Co. In 1975, he purchased the Hilda Truax Agency in Barnesville offering home, auto, life and health insurance. At the age of 65, he sold the agency to Bethel Insurance and continued to work for the agency until he retired this year after 60 years in the insurance business.
His wife, Dorothy, is the daughter of the late Pete and Hazel Kemp. Both Bill and Dorothy graduated from Bethesda High School in 1940 and have been lifelong members of the Bethesda United Methodist Church.
