CADIZ -- Visiting Martins Ferry swept host Harrison Central in three straight sets 25-16, 25-20 and 25-11 in Buckeye 8 volleyball action inside the John W. Stephenson Center Thursday evening.
The Huskies trailed early in the opener, then rallied late but could not dig themselves out of the hole. In the second the momentum seemed to stay with the blue and silver as they jumped out to an 8-3 early advantage.
A side out by the Purple Riders would bring an untried rotation onto the court for Harrison Central as a last minute scratch spoiled the card as Head Coach Sarah Wilden shuffled her lineup.
Martins Ferry’s Morgan Carpenter battles at the net with the Huskies Katie Stackhouse.
"She is an all the way round starter," Wilden said of Kaylee Toland, who was sidelined with an undisclosed injury. "We had to put people into positions they have never played before which did not help."
The Purple Riders slowly eroded the lead and knotted it back up at 14-apiece before pushing ahead for the win.
"We have been playing good enough to win but not up to our potential," Martins Ferry head coach Chuck Probst related. "We have a habit of slow starts, we finish strong, but we have to get there earlier in these matches."
Tyrah King paced the Purple Riders with nine kills,10 points with three aces and three digs.
Shaye DeLeonardis set 11 assists, served up nine points on three aces, six spikes, three digs and two blocks. Morgan Carpenter set eight assists, served up eight points, dug up four with two kills.
Katie Sutherland served up a game-high 14 points with seven no-return aces, four kills and four digs. Lauren Bennett added seven points with three aces and six digs for Martins Ferry.
Katie Stackhouse led the Huskies stat sheet with 10 assists and four kills.
Chelsea Toland chipped in with four kills, Jesse Ledger added three kills and dug up eight, while Lesley Decker notched three spikes and served up four aces.
