Imported Food

September 21, 2013
Times Leader

Dear Editor,

Readers may be taken back to know how much of the food Americans ingest is imported.

Approximately 20 percent of vegetables and 50 percent of fruit consumed in this country come from foreign lands, according to the current issue of The Progressive Populist.

Almost all the seafood American ingest is conveyed from abroad, and whether Vietnamese catfish is fit for human consumption is doubtful. Sure, there are country-of-origin labels on edibles, yet restaurants may buy and serve what they will.

Probably, the Food and Drug Administration should streamline its involved methods, and government inspection should be increased and made thorough. Chinese "fish farms" may pose a health threat greater than that of French cheese.
