MARTINS FERRY Every day, a select group of men and women here in the Ohio Valley put on a uniform and set out to make the public a better place; a safer place.
They do so with little fanfare and some even take it a step further and perform their duties without pay, serving as volunteers.
They are the men and women that make up our local police and fire departments and EMS squads.
These careers come with a real possibility of danger and injury, perhaps even life threatening, every time these workers step out their front doors.
Rarely does the pay match the workload, but that matters not for these special individuals.
They perform their duties out of a sense of honor, of pride and of commitment to their families, their co-workers and their community.
Someone has to do it and these people answer the call every day.
That's why The Times Leader puts out its annual Heroes special section, which hits the newsstand Sunday.
Inside, you'll find rosters, pictures and stories from our local fire and police departments, as well as a few in-depth profiles.
We invite you to read through this publication and stop and thank these men and women any time you get a chance.
It's an invaluable and often thankless service that they provide. This is just a small way of showing our appreciation for all that they do.
