Gray skies, constant rain and the threat of seasonal affective disorder.
That's what the Buds were dealing with last Friday.
We just can't help it - the fact that it gets dark out at 5 p.m. was already sucking the life out of us but top it off with soggy gloom and we were DONE.
Salad and wedding soup
Luckily, we know us pretty darn well, and one of our favorite ways to cure full-blown weather-related sadness is with...you guessed it - food!
Comfort food to be more specific. And on said day, it was Italian food in particular, so the Buds headed to Wheeling with hopes that Figaretti's Restaurant would be the remedy they needed.
Figaretti's, located at 1035 Mt. de Chantal Road, has been an area favorite for over 60 years. In fact, their uber popular homemade sauce is now sold in 12 states! The Buds, eager to indulge in Fig's goodness, were seated and began to peruse the menu.
The luncheon menu, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, offers patrons several options for getting their Italian fix: various types of pasta with sauce, all you can eat soup and salad, stuffed shells, ravioli and gnocchi, and a selection of sandwiches/burgers and salads.
Bud Em was definitely feeling like it was a soup day, so she opted for the unlimited soup, salad and bread which rang in at $6.25. She started off with a bowl of Fig's Italian wedding soup and a salad with their Italian dressing. In rather typical Bud fashion, the basket of fresh bread and butter was the first casualty of the day. (We can't help it - we love bread and it was yummy!) Soft and warm, it was perfect for dipping into the hot soup.
Bud Em's salad was made of iceberg lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber and onion. Everything was crisp and fresh and really hit the spot, making seconds necessary. The wedding soup had spinach and plenty of acini de pepe but Bud Em found it void of any meatballs - we're sure it's just the way it was scooped out of the pot. At any rate, it was hot and tasty. Taking full advantage of "all-you-can-eat", said Bud had stuffed pepper for her second helping of soup. This delightful concoction was loaded with meat, rice, and green pepper with a tomato base. The soup was a winner - delicious and satisfying, leaving no room for more.
Bud Shaunna decided it felt more like a pasta day and ordered the mushroom ravioli with a salad for $7.25. She was served a plate full of piping hot, delicious ravioli stuffed with a variety of mushrooms. Topped with Fig's signature tomato sauce, this was a hands down winner. Bud Hubby welcomed leftovers, but sadly for him, Bud S cleaned her plate. The soft, warm bread served as a nice way to sop up some of that leftover sweet sauce. A very satisfying and comforting meal!
The Buds left feeling a little better about the rest of the day. Sure, maybe it would be dark in a few hours, but we felt ready to conquer the world (at least our little corner of it) thanks to our cozy lunch! And we're pretty sure that if you pay a visit to Figaretti's, you'll leave with a smile on your face too.
