HERTLER, Donald Ray, Sr., age 85, passed away September 25, 2013, surrounded by family and friends at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, following surgery for a broken hip. Born May 9, 1928 in Bridgeport, Ohio, Don graduated from Bridgeport High School and Wittenberg College and served in the US Army.
His career as an educator spanned 30 years, starting with Marion, Ohio's State Street Junior High School in 1951. Don joined North Canton's Hoover High School in 1953, where he was a successful classroom teacher, coach, and administrator until his retirement in 1981. Don touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and families as a respected mentor and friend, and was recognized many times for service to his profession, community, and church (North Canton's Zion Lutheran Church).
Don is preceded in death by parents Christian and Doris Hertler; wife of 46 years, Nancy (d.1997);daughter Melinda (d. 2007);wife of 12 years, Shirley(d. 2012).
Survivors include daughter Rebecca Volkmann (husband Stephen) of Worthington, Ohio; daughter Susan VanVranken (husband Thomas) of North Canton; son Donald Hertler, Jr. (fiancee Heather Maxwell) of North Canton; grandchildren Jonathan and Benjamin VanVranken and Emily Volkmann; brother William (wife Beverly), brother James (wife Jean, deceased) many cousins, nieces and nephews; and beloved friends, neighbors, and colleagues.
His family invites you to attend calling hours Saturday, November 30, 4-8 p.m., at Hoover High School Gymnasium, 525 7th Street NE, North Canton, Ohio 44720.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, December 1, at the same location, starting at 2 p.m. Those wishing to view a film of Coach Hertler's life (same one shown during calling hours) may do so starting at 12:45 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.
