Monroe County to establish port authority

WOODSFIELD - Action to establish a port authority in Monroe County was taken Monday by the county commissioners, who also approved a motion concerning fire department turnout gear bids.

Approved unanimously was a resolution authorizing the creation of a port authority, and the resolution notes that it is in the best interests of all the people residing in the county.

John Pyles, who heads the board of commissioners, said an advantage of a port authority is that public and private money can be mixed, and this combination can help businesses grow.

Noting that Belmont County has a port authority, Pyles went on to say the port authority in Monroe County can help existing businesses and can attract new businesses.

The Monroe County Port Authority will be governed by a board of directors composed of five members appointed by the county commissioners, with one post on that board to be held by the acting president of the board of county commissioners.

Appointment of the new board is expected to occur in January. Pyles explained it hasn't been determined when in January the board members will be appointed, but it won't be until after the commissioners have their reorganizational meeting. That session will be their second meeting in January.

Initial terms for the port authority board will be one year for three members and two years for two members. The resolution also provides that after the initial appointments, all subsequent appointments will be for terms of four years in line with the provisions of the Ohio Revised Code.

The resolution concludes: "The creation and establishment of the Monroe County Port Authority shall be deemed to be concluded when the Monroe County Port Authority Board of Directors completes the first meeting and elects the chairman of (the) board."

In other matters, Mary Jo Westfall, Extension office associate, presented two bids received for turnout gear for the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department. This project has been approved for $9,900 in Community Development Block Grant funds.

The bids were from Dill's Fire & Safety Equipment, Ravenswood, W.Va., $7,377, and Finley Fire Equipment, McConelsville, $8,619.

Commissioners approved a motion for the turnout gear to be obtained from Dill's Fire & Safety Equipment, and the Lewisville department was given permission to purchase any extra sets to meet the amount of the CDBG funds OK'd for the gear.
