Ferry students challenged to excel

MARTINS FERRY - The Hess Corp. is reaching out to the young people of the area with incentives to succeed in academics and in life.

This past Friday representatives from the corporation spoke to an assembly of students at Martins Ferry High School about instigating the Challenge Inc. program.

They will present incentives of $200 to a student from each grade level in the categories of attendance, academic improvement based on GPA, community service, and performance in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

"It's the opportunity for you guys to do the right thing and be successful," said Mark Ziegenfuss of the Challenge Inc. program, adding that the qualities and disciplines will prove invaluable in private and professional life. "Industry wants those people, even right out of high school."

The first round will see $1,000 given at the senior banquet.

"When you head out to be successful, you work hard," said Robert Williams, Hess Operations team leader. "For the industry to be successful in the area, we need you to be successful."

Williams also underlined the importance of STEM fields to building the industry of the area.

"Most of our industry's have foundation of STEM," he said. "The oil and gas business, frankly, is STEM."

Williams said the opportunities for continual learning, industry and dedication to adding value to the community is open to anyone.

"It's all there guys, take part."
