Busy, busy, busy!
The first week of "spring" (we use the term very loosely here, folks) had the Buds running around like crazy. With so much to do, we had to take lunch on the fly one afternoon while on the job in Steubenville. And what better place to have a quick bite than at Sandella's Flatbread Cafe and Brioche Doree located on University Blvd. near the entrance to Franciscan University.
Founded in 1994 in Connecticut, Sandella's is an upscale, casual cafe serving premium quality, health-conscious menu items on their own brick oven flatbread. They offer a variety of grilled flatbreads, sandwiches, paninis, wraps, quesadillas, rice bowls and salads. Brioche Doree is a chain of bakery/cafe restaurants that started in France in 1976. The Steubenville location serves up a bevy of coffees and specialty drinks as well as a selection of baked goods and pastries.

Flatbreads, frappes and pastries? Yes, please!! The Buds were ready to dig in!
Bud Shaunna was stumped for some time while deciding what she wanted. Quite a few menu items jumped out at her, such as the Tuscan Chicken panini, which was loaded with chicken, Mozzarella cheese, sundried tomatoes, red onion, fresh basil and creamy pesto; the Cheddar Chicken and Broccoli rice bowl, comprised of brown rice, chicken, broccoli, cheddar jack cheese and Sandella's Brazilian sauce; and the Hummus Wrap which featured simply green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and hummus - a healthy option for sure!
Bud S ultimately settled on the Spinach and Bacon flatbread for $6.29. Sandella's topped its crispy flatbread with creamy pesto sauce, baby spinach, bacon and Feta and mozzarella cheeses. It tasted as good as it smelled and looked! It was a pretty decent size for one person, so Bud S took the rest home to Bud Hubby. Usually he eats leftovers and doesn't say much about them until he's prodded, but this time, he made a special point to remark that he really liked the flatbread. There could have been a bit more spinach and bacon, but overall, it is something Bud S would order again.

In addition to the flatbread, Bud S also gave in to her cravings and ordered an iced mocha chip frappe for around 4 bucks. Specialty coffees seem to be awful pricey, and Sandella's is pretty much on par with all the other fancy coffee places in the area. Still, at 4 bucks, this actually qualifies as a "sometimes" treat.
It's been a while since Bud S had sugar, and wow, was this sweet! Regardless, she slurped it to the bottom, not caring much about the sugar headache that would ensue later.
Bud Em pulled a rare but necessary maneuver, skipping the meal and going straight for dessert! Yep - she fell victim to the Brioche Doree pastry case. *sigh*
The case was full of tasty-looking baked goods such as butter croissants (umm...they said butter), chocolate croissants (help!), cinnamon rolls, an assortment of danishes and scones (we LOVE scones!), muffins, bagels with cream cheese, and cookies. Said Bud's willpower went out the window as she placed an order for a chocolate croissant, a cranberry orange muffin and a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie - plenty of goodies to spread throughout the day. Also nursing a frozen coffee drink addiction, she ordered an iced vanilla frappe to wash it down.
After sampling all of the pastries, Bud Em has two words of advice: chocolate croissant. Its flaky layers of buttery pastry and gooey chocolate inside made it a winner for sure. The muffin was also yummy as it was very moist and full of flavor, and the cool vanilla frappe made the perfect afternoon pick-me-up that Bud Em was looking for. The whole haul didn't even come to ten bucks, so said Bud was a happy gal.
Sandella's definitely benefits from its location near the university, evident by the continuous flow of students in and out while we Buds made our visit. In addition, the trendy menu and variety of specialty coffee drinks caters right to that genre, so it seems like a great combination. If you happen to find yourself heading through Steubenville, take a short drive up University Blvd. for a quick stop at Sandella's.
