YORKVILLE - The 10th annual Buckeye Relay For Life will take place Saturday, May 24 beginning at 11 a.m. at War Memorial Stadium in Yorkville. The American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event, Relay For Life unites communities across the globe to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer.
Over the past nine Buckeye Relays, more than a quarter of a million dollars have been raised for cancer research and patient services. "It boggles the mind to think that a small Relay in southern Jefferson County could accomplish such a feat," said Carol Webb, co-chair of the Relay. This year's goal is $46,000.
Currently, there are approximately nine teams signed up for the Buckeye Relay for Life. Webb would like to see that number grow. "Please tell your friends, family, co-workers and everyone you know about Relay. Encourage them to start a team and become a part of the largest fundraiser in the world! Did you know that one in 100 people are Relayers?"
On Sunday, April 27, a Bonanza Bingo benefiting the Buckeye Relay for Life will be held at Buckeye Local High School. Doors open at noon and bingo begins at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance or $25 at the door. For tickets, contact any Relay team member or call Carol Webb at 769-7395 or 546-4005. This bingo is made possible through a generous donation from Mr. and Mrs. Martin McKim in memory of their daughter, Kelly McKim Smith, who lost her battle with cancer at a very young age. Those pictured preparing for the event include: front row, from left, Martin McKim and June McKim, bingo sponsors; back row, Donna Ball, Relay team member; Bethani Barsch, ACS Relay Specialist for Jefferson County; Barb Blazeski, vendor representative; Chris Thompson, Relay team member; Ashley Lengyel, vendor representative; Carol Webb, Relay team member and Relay co-chair; and Amber Basich, vendor representative.
Webb stressed the importance of help from the entire community and urges anyone interested in forming a team to call Bethani Barsch, the American Cancer Society's Jefferson County representative, at 888-227-6446, extension 2212.

Numerous door prizes, including 16 big prizes, donated by area businesses and individuals will be awarded. Prizes this year include Coach bags, Longaberger items, Premier jewelry and 31 items, just to name a few. Food will also be available for purchase. This is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and proceeds benefit a great cause.

One of the big changes to the Buckeye Relay this year is the new location. The event has moved back to War Memorial Stadium in Yorkville, and the starting time has changed. The Relay will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 and continue for 18 hours. The survivor lap will begin at 6 p.m., right after the survivors and caregivers are treated to a survivor reception dinner served at 5. Survivors are encouraged to register in advance to ensure they receive a Relay T-shirt in the correct size. Survivors can register online at www.relayforlife.org/Buckeye or by calling Bethani Barsch at 888-227-6446.
The Luminaria Ceremony is one of the most exhilarating events at Relay as cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with this terrible disease are honored. The Buckeye Relay makes available two luminaria options: traditional luminaria bags, which are lit during the ceremony, and also picture luminaria, which is a computerized collection of photos honoring and in memory of friends and loved ones. This collection is set to music and projected and displayed during the Relay. Luminaria forms are available in advance by calling Bethani Barsch, or they can be purchased the night of the Relay.
Mark your calendars and plan to help a great cause at the Bonanza Bingo on Sunday, April 27 and at the Buckeye Relay For Life on Saturday, May 24.
