THE ST. Clair Commons project took a big step closer to becoming reality Monday night. The St. Clairsville Planning Commission gave its approval to the development proposal.
Fate of the expansive project is now in the hands of St. Clairsville City Council. We would expect the plan will again gain approval.
If St. Clair Commons comes to fruition it would be a major economic boon to St. Clairsville and Belmont County. It is a diversified venture, featuring wellness, housing and other businesses.
Its benefits are limitless.
"It is the greatest, largest single development in the City of St. Clairsville in its history, and perhaps even for the future," St. Clairsville Mayor Robert Vincenzo noted at a council meeting this month.
That speaks volumes of the impact and need for the project.
The project is composed of approximately 760,000 square feet.
The wellness building, alone, will produce 141 temporary jobs and 250 permanent jobs in the market. All told, about 550 temporary and 1,050 permanent jobs are expected to be created.
Total economic impact is half a billion dollars.
Windfalls such as this do not come down the pike very often, especially here in Eastern Ohio.
Even with city council's blessing at its next meeting, many I's needed dotted and T's crossed to get St. Clair Commons off the ground.
Developers hope to break ground on the project this year. That may be an ambitious timetable, but one we hope plays out.
