Tobacco House

June 26, 2014
Times Leader

THIS TOBACCO house photographed in 1936 along Ohio 148 (Captina Creek area) between Ohio 800 near Barnesville and Powhatan Point was one of the many such structures in Eastern Ohio years ago. A farm in Warren Township near Barnesville is credited with being the first place in Ohio where tobacco was grown for the market. The broad leaves of the tobacco plant were cured or dried in the many tobacco houses throughout the countryside, but entire structures aren't as prevalent as they were years ago.
