Birney is a family name well-known at the Harrison County Fair and one member was memoralized with a scholarship presentation at the Harrison County Junior Fair Night. According to his daughter, Jennifer Birney-Ryder, her father, Bill Birney died last October. He was president of Birney Farms and interested in agriculture and education. He was a 4-H adviser, member of Ohio 4-H and interested in helping youth. Chelsea Toland was the recipient of the first scholarship. She is a member and president of the Tri-County Showstoppers, Harrison FFA, National Honor Society member and four-year Ruritan scholar. On hand for the presentation were, front, Neely Ryder, 3, granddaughter; and back, from left, Billie Birney, son and an auctioneer; Barbara Birney, wife and Extension office associate; Ryder, daughter and New Rumley 4-H adviser; and Toland, scholarship recipient.
