MORRISTOWN - Schumacher Homes, a custom home builder, held a grand opening event on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The open house was an invitation for community members to tour the new Model Home Center in Morristown and learn about the way Schumacher builds homes.
Started in 1992 by Paul Schumacher, the on-your-lot builder has grown to become the largest of its kind. Based in Ohio, Schumacher Homes builds in 15 states.
Mary Becker, VP of Sales and Marketing, explained that Schumacher wanted to move into the Ohio Valley to reach customers who have been driving all the way to Akron to view model homes.

"We've been building in this area for years, and now we're reinforcing our commitment to this area," she said. "We find that many people own acreage in this area, with land having been in the family for years."
Becker said one-floor homes have become a trend, not only for the Ohio Valley, but across the nation. She added that Schumacher stays aware of trends and lifestyles, and they work to accommodate them. Those trends are visible in the model home's faux wood flooring, stylish lighting and ceilings, rustic kitchen backgrounds, and visible beams, among other design options. According to Becker, many model home visitors are impressed by the way Schumacher is able to incorporate natural lighting, open space and natural materials into the homes. While there are more than 100 models to choose from, the choices don't stop there. Customization is key, and customers can even work with a design center to make changes to floor plans in real time online.
"That's what people want. They want to customize and have their lifestyle reflected in their homes," Becker said.
Paul Schumacher was on hand for the open house. He explained that Schumacher wanted to expand in Belmont County to get to the "heart of the market," and better serve customers who have been making long drives to other model home centers.
The Belmont County Model Home Center team includes 12 employees.
"We're excited and proud to be here," said Kat Bryan, coordinator, while salesman Brad Hufeld added that they are excited about the boom in the area. The model home center will better serve not only the Ohio Valley, but also other parts of West Virginia.
The model in Morristown is a Beverly II E, which features a starting square footage of 2,428 ft., three bedrooms and two and a half baths. Other custom features include a stone fireplace, open kitchen plan, master bath and covered porch. Customers can go to the model to tour the home, meet with staff and view custom options including flooring, faucets, superficial architectural options and other items.
The model took 121 days to build, which is actually a bit longer than average, due to the offices for staff and landscaping. Jeff Ritchey, who transferred from the Akron office, takes pride in the short building times that Schumacher offers.
"We have very good trade partners and good construction managers that keep the job moving," Ritchey explained. He personally boasts the fastest building time in the company and received an award for his efforts.
Schumacher Homes carries its own collection of industry awards, including the 2012 National Quality Housing Award, the Diamond" Builder Designation by 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty, Owens Corning National, #1 Design Center in America Award from Professional Builder magazine, the Best of American Living Award and the Watermark Award for best master bath by Builder magazine.
