Nate Davis is a two-time champion.

Late Saturday night, Davis led his Amarillo Venom to their second consecutive Lone Star Football League title with a 70-69 shootout victory over the Laredo Rattlesnakes before 3,800 fans inside the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum.

“It feels really great,” Davis said via telephone Sunday night from Amarillo where he was attending a team function. “It was a pretty wild game, but we stuck together as a team and got it done.”

Trailing 69-63 with less than a minute to play, Davis drove the Venom (11-3) the distance as Alex Watson crashed over from two yards out to tie the game. Jason Cunningham’s PAT made it 70-69 with 11 seconds remaining.

However, the Rattlesnakes (9-5) fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Amarillo’s Donta Bright recovered to preserve the hard-earned win.

Davis, who played at Bellaire High and Ball State University before being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, accounted for seven of the Venom’s touchdowns. However, it was his feet that got him into the end zone four times.

“I’ve never run for four touchdowns in a game,” he admitted. “I don’t run a lot, but that is what they (Laredo) were giving me, so I took advantage of it.”

The 6-3, 220-pounder ran for scores of 3, 11, 1 and 8 yards. He also completed 20 of 35 passes for 243 yards and three more touchdowns, all going to wideout Doug Williams who hauled in 10 balls for 152 stripes. One six-pointer went for 45 yards.

As a team, Amarillo rushed for seven touchdowns which is almost unheard of in indoor football, which is usually a pass-happy league.

“Laredo was giving us the run and our coaching staff did a good job of recognizing that and we made the needed adjustments,” Davis said.

Prior to Saturday night’s game, Davis was named as the Co-Offensive Player in the LSFL with New Mexico quarterback Kasey Peters.

For the season, Davis completed 188 of 332 passes for 2,177 yards and an eye-popping 54 touchdowns compared just six interceptions in 11 games.

“I had a good season and it’s a great honor, but I couldn’t do it by myself. My teammates deserve a lot of credit.”

Because of his success, Davis has been talking to a couple of teams in different leagues around the country.

He said he will report later this month to San Antonio where he is a candidate for the San Antonio Defenders of the National Spring Football League, which kicks off its season in March.

Ironically, Davis had a stint in San Antonio earlier this season with the Talons of the Arena Football League. However, that didn’t work out and he re-joined the Venom.

I guess all things happen for a reason. In Nate’s case, that turned out to be true.
