Contest to throw your ring into the ring
WHEELING — Are you tough enough for love?
One Ohio Valley couple will have the chance to be during the 44th annual Ohio Valley Toughman Contest on Friday, Feb. 14. To enter, go to wvtoughman.com. The winning couple will be notified by Thursday.
“We just felt that with the first night of our show in Wheeling being on Valentine’s Day that we would offer something special,” Jerry Thomas of West Virginia Sports Promotions said.
Thomas stressed that only couples seriously thinking about taking that final step toward marriage should apply. The couple selected by a committee will receive two tickets to the Ohio Valley Toughman Contest on Friday, Feb. 14, a diamond ring provided by Shuggy’s Antiques & Jewelry of Wheeling, a gift certificate to Generations, and a chance to propose to your significant other in the ring.
“It will be something unique and that the couple will remember forever,” Thomas said.
The Toughman event in Wheeling will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 15, with championship matches in 10 weight classifications – five in each the men’s and women’s divisions.
The Wheeling event is the second longest-running in Toughman history, trailing Clarksburg by two years. Thomas cited multiple reasons for that longevity.
“The Ohio Valley has a lot of hard-working, blue collar people and boxing was very popular in the region prior to the creation of Toughman,” he said. “The Ohio Valley was a hotbed for boxing, and Toughman seemed like a natural addition to what was already going on in the Wheeling area.”
Thomas affectionately calls Wheeling “The Super Bowl of Toughman.”
“It is one of our biggest events, and I really think that WesBanco Arena is one of the nicest arenas in the region,” he noted. “It is beautiful in the way it is laid out, and the recent renovations make it more fan-friendly. We really enjoy coming here every year.”
More than $25,000 in prize money will be distributed among the winning fighters and the winning ring girl contestant.
The first bell rings at 7 p.m. both nights.
