Watt Center annual elementary art show is set

Barnesville — The Watt Center for History & the Arts’ annual elementary school art show is scheduled for Sunday, April 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The artists are students from Barnesville Elementary School. The public will be welcomed to attend. “Volunteers at the Watt Center delight in showcasing these talented young artists and having them visit” a spokesperson noted.

The Watt Center works to encourage local artists and interest in the arts, as well as local history. Volunteers focus on creating displays, offering speakers and caring for the historic Watt Car and Wheel office building that is home to the center. The building is about 100 years old and remains in much of its original condition, with decorative metal ceilings, wood paneling, and six vaults.

A popular fund-raising event is held during the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, when a very large used book sale welcomes readers of all ages and interests. Books fill many of the main floor rooms, with local history displays in others, focused on manufacturing, farming, retail business, and inventor Elisha Gray. Extensive work is underway in the building’s basement to create a replica of an early coal mine.

Regular meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. Questions about the Watt Center may be directed to Beverly Hannahs 740-425-1537 or Mary Sidwell 740-926-1547.
