New restaurant opens in place of old in Barnesville
BARNESVILLE — On The Rocks Grill & Tavern has opened up inside the former Annie K’s restaurant in Barnesville.
The new restaurant is open seven days a week and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
Scott Schnegg, owner of the grill, said he purchased the restaurant on Nov. 18 and reopened under the new name just days later on Nov. 21. Schnegg, who is a Barnesville native, saw a lot of opportunity in the building and wanted to create something that the entire community could enjoy.
“I got this building and decided I wanted to see it to its fullest potential. … My full plans are to try and hit every age group, make it comfortable for anyone to come in and want to hang out — from a young child to feel comfortable to parents to a teenager to seniors,” he said.
Right off the bat, Schnegg expanded the hours of operations. On The Rocks is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The previous establishment was only open until 3 p.m.
He said he has received a positive response so far with pretty full days for the past six weeks of being open, though he did struggle initially with finding a full staff.
“We’re still learning the inventory and figuring out what all we want to do,” he said.
January and February are known for being slow months in the restaurant business; however, it has remained pretty steady, he said.
Schnegg said he recently updated the menu to include some new items such as chicken alfredo — a big hit — and new appetizers.
“It was a well-rounded menu, but I kind of tweaked and changed the products to get a lot fresher meats and produce and try to get away from frozen stuff,” he said.
The restaurant’s current biggest seller is the sirloin tips with peppers, onion and mushrooms. Another favorite is the wraps and, of course, burgers. Schnegg said the eatery is averaging around 20 pounds of burger each day.
He said one side of the building has a similar setup to a sports bar with four big screen televisions on each wall, while the restaurant portion maintains a family atmosphere.
Schnegg said the staff continues to do upgrades and improvements to the eatery. He asks that customers stick with them as they make these changes.
“We’re going to keep improving on the quality of our food and try to keep everything as fresh — especially the meat department,” he said, adding that he plans to perform some work on the building itself, which was constructed in 1954, including polishing the floors and redoing the restrooms.
“We’re trying to build it up into something where people feel comfortable.”
Also, plans to begin holding live entertainment are in the works.
A grand opening is being planned for the end of the month. Schnegg said they are eyeing the weekend of Jan. 28. He said he wants to have giveaways, door prizes and games for both adults and children.
“I want people to come in and have a good time,” he said. “People can come in, relax, get something to eat and have fun for a while.”
