Three alumni to be inducted into Bridgeport Hall of Fame

BRIDGEPORT — The Bridgeport Alumni Association will honor three alumni of Bridgeport High School during an induction ceremony on June 24.

New members of the Bridgeport Hall of Fame will include John Romanoski (Class of 1944), Lloyd Grandstaff (Class of 1955) and Kenneth Johnson (Class of 1963)

∫ Romanowski

After graduating from Bridgeport High School in 1944, Romanowski attended the College of Steubenville for four years majoring in physics and mathematics graduating in 1951 with honors. He then went on to study theology for four years at Francis Seminary in Loretto, Pennsylvania. For 10 years, Romanowski studied for the priesthood. He continued his education at Yale Institute of Dynamic Astronomy in New Haven, Connecticut and University of Arizona.

Romanowski served in the military during World War II from 1944-46 when he was honorably discharged. He has received both the Army Commendation Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1946, Romanowski helped organize the Wolfhurst Volunteer Fire Department where he served as a captain for many years.

In 1957, Romanowski taught college math and chemistry at St. John Vianney in Bloomingdale. He also was an instructor in high school physics and biology. He was a college professor for three years. Romanowski also taught at St. Joseph Central in Bridgeport and Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina.

Romanowski was employed as a research engineer in the space and information systems division of the North American Aviation Co., the primary contractor of NASA for the Apollo Moon Project.

After his retirement, Romanowski continued to volunteer at the Wolfhurst Fire Department and became a volunteer at Heartland Lansing Nursing Home.

Other accomplishments include serving as a eucharistic minister for St. Joseph Church’s homebound. He is a lifetime member of the Polish American Club in Wolfhurst and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans of Bellaire.

Romanowski currently resides at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation and Care Center.

∫Grandstaff

After finishing high school in 1955, Grandstaff went to work at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel as a foreman. He then had a successful career as a licensed contractor who served many in the area.

Grandstaff joined the Bridgeport school district as its maintenance supervisor, overseeing four school buildings and Perkins Field. He enjoyed training former employees as well as Occupational Work Adjustment and Occupational Work Experience students who continued to serve the school district. Grandstaff also served as bus coordinator. He was known to be on the job 24/7 and put the school district, students, and teachers first.

Grandstaff was also an active member of the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, where he recruited and trained countless volunteers and helped raise funds for the department.

He was a member of the Epworth Cottage Owners Association in Bethesda, where he served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee.

Grandstaff was a volunteer at the Bridgeport Food Pantry, where he built shelves and regularly stocked them with food. Perhaps most famously, Grandstaff also cooked and served bean soup at Bridgeport Bulldog home football games. The proceeds from the soup sales were donated to the Athletic Board. He also cooked bean soup for Peterson Hospital and Wheeling Hospital Continuous Care Center as well as Shadyside High School Football Playoff games.

Grandstaff is also a master wood craftsman and he loved spending time in his workshop with coal in the potbelly stove, making wonderful, unique gifts for family and friends.

∫ Johnson

Johnson graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1963 at age 17 and less than one month following graduation, he went to Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. During the first two years in the Corps, Johnson was assigned to a machine gun unit, and during the second two years, Johnson served as a Marine Security Guard at the American consulate in Calcutta, India and the American embassy in Athens, Greece.

During his time in Athens, Johnson was recruited by the CIA.

While working for the CIA, Johnson started his college education majoring in psychology. He left the CIA and went on to work at a mental health institute.

Johnson eventually left the mental health field and became a CIA officer.

Johnson has studied different cultures and spent considerable time traveling the globe. After serving over 25 years in the CIA, Johnson retired but continued to be called back to the CIA and other government agencies and corporations to assess various programs and personnel.

Once Johnson fully retired, he volunteered to work with unwed teen mothers, and for the past several years he has been active in Kairos, a prison ministry.

The induction ceremony will take place during the annual alumni banquet at 5:30 p.m. June 24 at Undo’s West in St. Clairsville.
