Tractor trailer crash led to I-70 overpass damage
WHEELING — The West Virginia Division of Highways closed the Interstate 70 westbound on-ramp in Elm Grove on Tuesday to repair damage to the overpass across National Road that occurred sometime Monday.
According to the WVDOH, a tractor trailer collided with the I-70 barrier above the Elm Grove Pizza Hut parking lot Monday due to slippery road conditions from the winter storm..
The was closed for temporary repairs — a cover was installed over the cracked portion of the barrier — until more permanent repairs on the damaged parapet wall can be completed. Those repairs were completed Tuesday.
Other lanes remained open, according to a press release from WVDOH.
Tracy Brown, a WVDOH State Bridge Engineer, said in the press release that the damage was limited to the concrete barrier and does not pose any safety concerns for drivers.
“The barrier’s purpose is to help prevent an errant vehicle from going off the bridge and is not part of the bridge’s primary structural system. The bridge remains safe for the traveling public,” Brown said in the release.
The area below the overpass has been coned off since Monday.
