Alleged meth in child’s system leads to charges for parents
MINGO JUNCTION — The alleged discovery of methamphetamine in a 1-year-old child’s system has left two local parents facing felony child endangerment charges.
Caleb Pyle, 33, and Rainy McCain, 33, were arrested March 12 following an investigation by the Mingo Junction Police Department in conjunction with Jefferson County Children Services.
The two were charged March 14 with third-degree felony endangering children. They are set to appear Monday in Jefferson County Court District 2 in Wintersville for their preliminary hearings.
According to reports, police were contacted March 8 by a Children Services investigator regarding a 1-year-old male juvenile who’d been found with methamphetamine in his system.
The investigator claimed the child’s parents had noticed he was lethargic, throwing up and fainting. Another relative transported the child to Weirton Medical Center, and upon further examination, he was found to have methamphetamine in his system. He was transferred to UPMC Children’s Hospital for additional testing, which revealed the same.
The child was scheduled to be released from the hospital that day, the investigator said, and he’d be placed in the custody of a relative.
On March 11, amid follow-up interviews, police received a drug screen laboratory report for the child. According to reports, the test was positive for methamphetamine, pholedrine (4-hydroxymethamphetamine) or methamphetamine metabolite, amphetamine, acetaminophen and nicotine metabolite (cotinine) in urine.
Mingo Junction Police Chief Willie McKenzie III said Pyle and McCain were arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail after allegedly admitting to ingesting meth prior to the incident.
