NHS Collecting Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House

CONNORVILLE — The Buckeye Local High School National Honor Society is spearheading a pop can tab collection to benefit Ronald McDonald House.

The collection got underway in mid-March and lasts until April 11, after which the tabs will be delivered to the facility in Columbus. Adviser Savana Granat said a competition was being held between homerooms and the event holds significant meaning for one member.

“It’s our first big service project of the year,” Granat said. “We were thinking of a way to get classrooms involved, so we’re holding a competition until April 11. On April 14, I will take the four officers and we will deliver them to the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus.”

NHS Vice President Sydney Snyder said the activity is in memory of her cousin, Tristan Tolloty, who died two years ago at age 16.

“I wanted to do something to help other kids in the hospital,” Snyder added, saying she and her family stayed at the facility while her cousin underwent treatment. “I’m very happy that we can do things to help, and I’m happy to be part of it.”

Snyder will join NHS President Arielle Orban, Secretary Emma McHugh and Treasurer Lena Anderson as they travel with Granat to deliver the tabs. Buckets have been placed in each homeroom and the winners will receive 100 paws towards their Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports rewards and a half-day in the gym. Granat said the tabs will be recycled and proceeds will help defray costs for electricity at the facility, where families of young patients can stay for free.

The BLHS NHS has 19 members but plans to induct 32 more during a ceremony on May 1. Granat said the group has done other projects including cleanup at the Warren Township Park. Future goals are to hopefully hold a Relay For Life event at the school next year.
