Sump pump failure causes flood at Bethlehem Apostolic Temple

WHEELING — Services were held as usual Sunday at Bethlehem Apostolic Temple after a sump pump failed and flooded the church’s basement.

Suff. Bishop Darrell Cummings said the temple, located at 330 Main St., is built on an underground stream.

“We constantly have to pump it out,” he said. “But if the sump pump fails, the water stays in the building and comes up and floods.

“The sump pump failed. It had an alarm, but it didn’t go off. The water didn’t pump out, and we’re looking at what we can do to keep that from happening again.”

Meanwhile, the water is now out of the basement and the church is working on the fallout, according to Cummings.

“We are trying to clean up, and we lost some things,” he said. “Mainly the loss and damage was to the carpet, papers, anything that was on the floor.

“We haven’t been able to get to the full extent of all of the loss yet. We’re working on determining what we lost, and what needs to be repaired.”

Cummings added that it is likely the church will not turn any of the losses in for insurance recovery.

“That is for bigger disasters,” said. “I was instructed, if we turned it in, we might lose our insurance if we did.

“We will try to handle this ourselves, and save the insurance for something bigger.”

Bethlehem Apostolic Temple also continues to work on its upcoming Easter giveaway, which is set for 11 a.m. April 19 at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center. None of the items set for distribution was affected by the flooding.

“Nothing was on the floor,” Cummings said. “We are still collecting for Easter. We are prepared to do it on April 19. We have ordered the food and are negotiating to get more.”

The church will also host its annual “Stuff The Bus” event in preparation for the giveaway from 4-6 p.m. April 10 at Riesbeck’s in Elm Grove.
