Clarington to mark 200th anniversary with celebration

CLARINGTON — The village of Clarington will mark its 200th anniversary with a bicentennial celebration Saturday.

Taylor Abbott, Monroe County treasurer and a member of the Clarington Bicentennial Committee, said there will be something for everyone to do at the June 18 event.

“We’re celebrating our 200 years, the past, present and future,” he said. “It’s entirely a group effort. We’ve had a great response from the committee, and almost every business in town is participating in some way. We hope people will turn out and enjoy the afternoon.”

The day’s events will include a 5K run/walk, a car show, games for children, local vendors, food, a parade and live music.

He said events will take place around the village throughout the day.

The Bicentennial Committee wanted to bring the community together while also helping to raise funds for the Clarington Volunteer Fire Department. Abbott said the majority of the proceeds from the day’s events will benefit the VFD.

“We want to help give back to them. … We want to make sure it’s as successful as possible for our fire department,” he said.

The day will kick off with a 5K race/walk at 9 a.m. with signup at 8 a.m. at the former union hall. An opening ceremony is set for 11 a.m. along Market Street near the former credit union building. Abbott said River High School’s band will perform just before and during the ceremony.

“They’ll be performing 15 minutes prior and then they’ll do the national anthem,” he said.

Other event activities include:

— A car cruise-in from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Market Street (all cars are welcome);

— Craft vendors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mel’s Banquet Hall;

— Monroe Soil and Water Conservation activities for kids at the Sunfish Creek Marina;

— Abbott open house and history exhibit from noon to 3 p.m.;

— Clair Tavern fourth annual VFD Poker Run begins at 11 a.m. with live music by The Remedy following an auction at 6:30 p.m.;

— Immanuel Church Ice Cream Social from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with kids activities and a magic show;

— Little League baseball games starting at noon at the Clarington Baseball Field with chicken dinners being sold;

— Bounce houses at Clarinda Park.

Additionally, food vendors will be stationed at various locations around town, and a parade will make its way through the village beginning in the downtown area at 5:30 p.m.

Abbott said he and his wife, Alex, will be hosting a tour of their home that was formerly a church that they purchased for $1 in 2016. The couple spent the next few years renovating the space, transforming it into their dream home.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming people in to see the house and see some of the Clarington history that we have. I put together a 30-minute video of old photographs highlighting American history and some things that have happened in town over the years so people can view that during the open house,” he said.

Abbott sent out a special “thanks” to fellow committee members Christie Thomas, who spearheaded the event, and Councilman Kiven Smithberger, chairperson.

“Everyone has pulled their weight and done a great job putting this together,” he added.

All are encouraged and welcome to attend the event.

“We want everyone to enjoy themselves and take in the great weather that we’re expecting,” he said.
