BARNESVILLE — WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital has purchased 12 new glass whiteboards for inpatient rooms thanks to the generosity of a former employee’s family.

David Carroll was a longtime Barnesville Hospital employee, who served as a technical support analyst in the IT department for more than 21 years. After Carroll died in May, his family donated funds along with donations from hospital employees and friends of the family to purchase glass whiteboards in his memory.

Carroll enjoyed all aspects of information technology, but was particularly fond of collecting Star Wars Lego sets.

“When David’s brother Bob and I discussed what to do with his extensive Lego collection, we decided to sell it and donate the proceeds,” Carol Carroll said. “I think he would approve of the choice we made and how it will contribute to a positive experience for patients at Barnesville Hospital as well as assist staff in communications.”

The whiteboards’ significance extends beyond the practical. According to the hospital, they promote transparency and foster a patient-centered approach, aligning with modern healthcare models.

Additionally, they humanize the healthcare experience by reinforcing a sense of empathy and compassion. Personalized messages of encouragement, care team introductions, and updates on milestones can all be shared on these boards, making patients feel valued and supported during their hospital stay.

“David was a special and integral part of the Barnesville Hospital team for many years,” said Donna White, manager of grants and community development. “When Carol and I discussed a way to honor David’s memory, we took their request to heart and found a special project that would help other patients and their families during their hospital stay. It is a perfect way to remember David’s kind heart and let his memory shine bright.”
