Barnesville board of ed accepts bid for middle school roof replacement project

BARNESVILLE — The Barnesville Board of Education accepted a nearly $200,000 bid from Saup-Hartley Roofing LLC to replace the roof at the middle school.

Board members, including Tammy Wells, Janice Miliken, Dennis Huntsman, Leslie Schultz and Ed Eberhart, accepted a bid from Saup-Hartley Roofing LLC of Adamsville, Ohio, for the roof replacement project at the middle school at a cost of $195,836.29.

The project is a capital improvement to replace the second half of the roof that was completed two years ago. The current roof has reached its life expectancy, so the roof replacement ensures the district continues to maintain its facilities for years to come.

“We create a maintenance plan looking into the future so we can manage our finances appropriately in relation to the scope of our projects,” Superintendent Micah Fuchs said. “This allows us to meet all of the maintenance needs throughout the district.”

The board also adopted two resolutions at the meeting, including 25-11, which lists inter-district open enrollment guidelines for the 2025-26 school year.

The other one, 25-12, approved the amounts and rates determined by the Budget Commision for FY2026. The general fund receives 2.65 of inside millage, which is property taxes imposed without voter approval, for $739,091. It also receives 36.55 outside mills, or revenue generated by voter-approved levies, for an additional $5,978,885.92. That totals 39.20 total mills, which generates $6,717,976.92. For the permanent improvement fund, 1.25 mills equals $348,627.83.

These tax amounts are based on the county’s most recent approved valuation and tax levy rates.

The board received 12 donations during this month’s meeting, including nine that went to robotics: J-Mo Meats donated $100, American Legion Post 168 donated $200, Starr’s Used Cars Inc. donated $200, B.P.O.E No 1699 donated $100, Barnesville Antique Mall donated $50, Barnesville Vision Center donated $50, ML Group LLC donated $100, Rumer Loudin donated $100 and Williams donated $2,500.

Other donations came from: Capital Foundation for the seventh grade field trip at $400; Barnesville Area Education Foundation to the class of 2025 senior trip at $2,500; Barnesville Area Education Foundation to seventh grade field trip at $1,000; and a pledge of $1,000 from the Shamrock 200 Club to the football turf and lighting project.

The board also non-renewed many supplemental contracts — a process it completes annually. These included contracts for: including head boys’ basketball coach Shane Stephens, assistant boys’ basketball coach Hunter Carpenter, assistant junior high boys’ basketball coacch Denny Thompson, assistant junior high boys’ basketball coach Troy Fitzpatrick, co-assistant junior high boys’ basketball coach Sam Wells, head girls’ basketball coach Ty Leach, assistant girls’ basketball coach Brian Clark, assistant junior high girls’ basketball coach Jenny Richey, assistant junior high girls’ basketball coach Mariah Shumaker, head wrestling coach Jayson Stephen, assistant wrestling coach Rick Milhoan, assistant junior high wrestling coach Skyler King, head bowling coach Chad Hall, head swimming coach Bobbi Jo Johnson, head cheerleading coach Abby McClelland and assistant cheerleading coach Katey Rockwell.

Two new volunteers will assist in baseball, Cade Hannahs and Zach Thompson.

Members then approved a list with updates to many school policies, such as employment of substitute teaching staff, seizure safety, teaching about religion, extracurricular activities, College Credit Plus and food sale standards and services.

The 2026-27 school year prom will be at the new Shady Lane Event Center in Barnesville on April 24, 2027, as approved by the board.

Halle Ralston and Dale Bunting will be substitutes at the schools, with Ralston as a substitute educational aide and Bunting as a substitute bus driver and floater.

Project Lead The Way teacher Jon Jordan will be resigning at the end of the school year.

Finally, VEX Robotics Worlds Competition for Middle School qualifying team members will make their way to Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas, for an overnight field trip from May 8-12.
