3 organizations offer desserts, fish dinners for good causes

FLUSHING — Bake sale items will be available at Flushing Volunteer Fire Department’s fish fry Friday, as two dog rescue organizations team up with the VFD to raise money.

Belmont County Pawsitive Placements and Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers are partnering with the fire department to raise funds for all three organizations. The dog rescues will be having a bake sale at the fire department’s fish fry from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the fire station, 104 E. High St. in Flushing.

The bake sale fundraiser will include items such as bread, homemade pies, cookies and other desserts while the fire department sells its fish that Pawsitive Placements Director Ashley Barto described as “amazing.” Homemade dog treats will also be available.

The fish fry will include a fish dinner for $14, a 10-piece boneless chicken wing dinner for $11 and a 21-piece shrimp dinner for $15. The dinners include fresh cut fries and coleslaw or mac and cheese. Other featured sides are onion rings, cheddar cheese curds and hot pepper cheese curds.

Barto said patrons won’t be disappointed with the food because it’s great.

People can dine in or carry out, and the fire department also delivers the food within reason and will deliver further with larger orders. People can also have baked goods delivered with their orders.

Belmont County Pawsitive Placements is raising funds to eventually open a no-kill dog rescue facility in Belmont County that will not be affiliated with the county commissioners.

The Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers are raising money to cover vet bills for dogs in its care.

Barto said the department is raising money through the fish fry because it is a volunteer organization that relies on public support.

“They mean a lot to me,” Barto said. “I was a member there for many years, and I also helped with the fish frys. My mom was a huge part of the department with fundraising.”

The department will have raffles at the fish fry, including one in which someone could win a Blackstone pizza oven.

This is the second time Belmont County Pawsitive Placements has partnered with the Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers, and Barto decided to work with the organization again because the members care about dogs just as much as she does and takes care of them.

The Harrison County Dog Pound Volunteers will have raffle tickets to win a bicycle; the organization will draw the winner on Good Friday, April 18.

Barto believes people should come to this bake sale and fish fry because they can support dogs and a local fire department at the same time.

The Flushing VFD is having fish frys every Friday until Easter, which is on Sunday, April 20.

“The fire department is open because of volunteers and their hard work and dedication,” she said. “People actually need them. People don’t realize that you need them until you actually realize you need them.”
