ELAINE PHILLIPS
Elaine Lucy Phillips, 96, of Barnesville died on June 16, 2024. She was born on July 19, 1927 on Belmont Ridge near Beallsville, Ohio, daughter of the late Luther Moore and Jessie Marjorie Wright Phillips.
Elaine and her twin sister, Arlene operated the Twins Beauty Shop in Barnesville for 45 years. Their lifelong friend, Lois Van Scyoc, who owned the Green Cottage Restaurant across the street from the beauty shop, were young business owners in the 1950s, a time when women rarely went into business. Elaine was a fourth-generation member of the Belmont Ridge Christian Church and attended Bethesda Christian Church for many years.
Elaine and Arlene mastered many crafts through the years, including restoring and collecting antiques, making beautiful handmade quilts, and driving their Jeep to remote cemeteries to study genealogies. She and Arlene provided festive, generous Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, as well as summer vacations, for their nine nieces and nephews (PL9s). Children, dogs, and cats were always loved and welcome in their home. Their home in Barnesville was beautifully decorated for Pumpkin Festival, which was attended by the PL9s and their children; everyone loved the parades, rides, and food trucks parked just outside of their home.
In recent years, her life has been brightened by daily visits and care from Liza, Graham, and Mallory Spence, as well as devoted care from Sharon Dillon and Amy Caldwell.
In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by Arlene; her sister, Laura Nelle Lillie; her brother Calvin Phillips, nephew Philip Phillips, and friend Lois Van Scyoc.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 10am to 11am at Wilson Funeral Home, Bethesda Chapel, 322 North Main Street, Bethesda, Ohio 43719. The graveside service will follow at Belmont Ridge Cemetery near Beallsville, w/ Minister Tim Snyder officiating.
Memorial gifts may be sent to Bethesda Christian Church, 40601 Bethesda Belmont Road, P.O. Box 517, Bethesda, Ohio 43719.
