Dr. SHARON LAZO
Dr. Sharon Lazo, a distinguished physician, educator, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, in St. Clairsville, Ohio, at the age of 81.
Born on November 21, 1943, in Joliet, Illinois, Sharon was the daughter of the late Donald and L’Donne Dickens Marso, direct descendants of Charles Dickens. From an early age, she displayed a passion for science and a deep commitment to serving others– qualities that would shape her extraordinary life and career.
Dr. Lazo’s journey began as a middle school science teacher, where she inspired young minds with her love of learning. Following her time in the classroom, she pursued a medical degree from the University of Florida Medical School, graduating in 1975. She became a Board-Certified Family Physician, embarking on a career defined by compassion and excellence.
Her medical training included a rotating internship at Pasqua Hospital in Saskatchewan, where she honed her skills and gained invaluable experience. Dr. Lazo then joined the family practice program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, before continuing her career at East Ohio Regional Hospital, where she proudly served as President of the Medical Staff.
In 1981, Dr. Sharon Lazo and her husband, Dr. Fausto Lazo, established Lazo Family Medicine in Bridgeport, Ohio. Together, they dedicated more than three decades to the care and well-being of their patients, retiring in 2016. Their practice became a cornerstone of the community, offering compassionate care to generations of families in the Ohio Valley.
Beyond her professional life, Dr. Lazo found immense joy in her personal passions. A proud and spirited sports fan, she never missed a chance to cheer on her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers or her alma mater, the Florida Gators. She shared her enthusiasm for sports with her family, creating cherished memories at Final Fours, Super Bowls, and countless game days.
Dr. Lazo also treasured the time spent with her family at Disney World, where she orchestrated unforgettable family reunion vacations. Whether strolling down Main Street, U.S.A., or enjoying the magic of the parks, she delighted in creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love. Her vibrant spirit, deep commitment to family, and zest for life touched everyone who knew her.
Dr. Lazo was preceded in death by her beloved son, David Alexander Lazo, on February 22, 2015, as well as by her siblings, Richard Marso and Debbie Gonzales. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Dr. Fausto Lazo; a special nephew, Brian Gonzales, and his wife, Emily, along with their children, Elise, Lila, and Cole Gonzales; and a host of friends, colleagues, and patients who will always remember her warmth and kindness.
Dr. Sharon Lazo will be remembered as a healer, mentor, and beacon of positivity. Her legacy of professionalism, compassion, and boundless love for life will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of her life will take place this coming summer at a time chosen by her family. They extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Ohio Valley community for its unwavering support over the years. Special thanks are given to the staff at Belmont Manor for their compassionate end-of-life care, with particular appreciation to Dianna and Rick for their kindness and dedication.
