PEGGY DOWLER THOMAS
Peggy was born March 1, 1933 in Wheeling, WV, the daughter of the late Roy W. Dowler and Martha Woods Dowler.
Peggy was a 1951 graduate of Warwood High School and was the Valedictorian of her class. In her junior year, she was elected to the National Honor Society. She was a member of the National Thespian Society and was a Warwood Viking Cheerleader. She was a member of the Homecoming Court in her senior year.
She was selected by her teachers to attend West Virginia Girls State her senior year in Warwood High School. She was also selected to sing in the West Virginia All State Chorus her senior year.
She was proud to be awarded the Good Citizenship Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution her senior year. She was a member of the GAC (Girls Athletic Club) from 9th to 12th grade. She was a member of the Student Council and served as the Treasurer. She was a member of the Y Teens and was president of the club her senior year in high school.
Peggy graduated from the Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. She worked there until 1974 when she accepted a nursing position with Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation. It was there that she met the love of her life, Arthur (Archie) Thomas, whom she married in 1980.
Peggy worked at the Mingo Junction plant until 1991 when she retired. During her tenure at the Mingo plant, she was honored by the National Management Association and Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation as the employee of the month for September of 1991 in recognition of Outstanding Service.
Peggy was a member of the Community of Christ Church and the Alumni Association of the Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband of 37 years, Arthur (Archie) Thomas; two sisters, Nancy McCormick and Marceline JoAnn Dowler; her step-mother, Edith Dowler; a step-daughter, Cynthia Lee Thomas and her son-in-law, Chris Wiley.
Surviving are her three children, whom she adored, JoLynn Wiley of Milton, FL, Robert (Lauralee) Meyers of Port Orange, FL and Craig (Kristine) Meyers of Como, CO; two step-daughters, Patricia Warner of Bellaire, OH and Gloria (Thomas) Galaviz of Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 441 37th Street, Bellaire, OH on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 10:00am until the time of service at 11:00am. Burial to follow immediately in Davis Cemetery, Bellaire, OH.
