MICHAEL BARTO
Michael Clarence “Mike” Barto, 71, of Flushing, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Flushing, Ohio. He was born January 20, 1954, in Barnesville, Ohio, a son of the late Peter and Velma Ethel VanFossen Barto.
Mike was a retired coal miner. He worked at the Franklin New Athens-Flushing mine from 1972-1976 and the McElroy Marshall County Mine, a subsidiary of Consol Energy from 1976-2015. He was a 1972 graduate of Union Local High School. He was a member of the sons of the Flushing American Legion Post 366, where he served as the Chaplain. He was a member of the St. Clairsville VFW 5356 and the Lafferty Moose Lodge 1462. He was a member of the UMWA, played softball for Rolling Hills, enjoyed riding his Harley and playing darts. He married the love of his life on December 13, 1974, Sharon Ann Kugler Barto, they shared 40 years of marriage together. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Indians. He loved his granddog, Wilson and his four grandcats.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Ann Kugler Barto in 2015; his twin brother, Patrick Barto; and four sisters, Helen Barto, Sue Cordner, Nancy Lara and Betty Marinacci.
He is survived by his two children, Christopher “Mikey” (Michelle) Barto of Wheeling, West Virginia and Ashley Nicole Barto of Flushing, Ohio; two grandchildren, Andy and Megan Barto; two bonus grandchildren, Tennieal Porter and Jyllian Norman; two brothers, Pete (Henle) Barto and Mark (Debbie) Barto; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 2 p.m. with Pastor Pete Tuchek officiating. Burial will follow in Longview Cemetery, New Athens, Ohio.
