Improvements to OUE
More than 60 years ago, Ohio University made an investment in Belmont County that has paid big dividends for thousands of area residents.
The university established what is known today as Ohio University Eastern — a “branch” campus of the Athens school located along U.S. 40 west of St. Clairsville. Launched primarily as a teacher training location, OUE has evolved to offer a broad array of four-year degrees for people of all ages who seek to continue their education right here at home.
Now, Ohio University is making another investment in the future of the site. It announced plans to spend $3.24 million to improve Shannon Hall, the stately brick building that serves as the main academic center of the campus. Starting this week, upgrades will enhance the structure’s mechanical systems and aesthetics. The project includes work on all three floors to update HVAC systems, lighting, ceiling tiles and more to modernize the atmosphere and improve functionality of the facility.
The work is expected to take several months to complete, and it will create some inconveniences for staff and students. In the end, though, it will all be worth it.
This investment demonstrates Ohio University’s commitment to continuing to offer a quality education — and a state-of-the-art space — to the people of Belmont, Harrison Monroe and surrounding counties. The university is to be commended for launching this effort.
