Stay safe on the water
They say the two best days in a boat-owner’s life are the day they buy the boat and the day they sell the boat. But somewhere in between is a good day on which boaters finish their Ohio Boating Education Course and know they are better prepared for a safe summer on the water for themselves and their guests.
“Spring is the perfect time to get prepared for a fun and safe boating season,” said Andy Foos, Ohio Department of Natural Resources boating education coordinator. “The Ohio Boating Education Course is a great way to make sure you understand key safety measures, navigate legal requirements, and become a more confident boater. It’s not just about meeting the law — it’s about enjoying the water responsibly.”
Courses began in March, and will continue to be available through May. Boaters can find the right course for their region and register here:

It’s only a day-long course (although there will be a test), and completing it should give boat owners a measure of confidence. While making sure their own skills are up to snuff, boaters can also take the opportunity to inspect their equipment and make sure registration is up to date.
Of course, even after a refresher course on the rules, boaters must still FOLLOW those rules. And it is essential that they don’t operate their boats while under the influence or distracted.
Ohio has plenty of bodies of water to enjoy on a boat this season. Get off on the right foot and register for the education course. Then, relax and enjoy.
