St. Clairsville powers past Union Local, 16-5

MORRISTOWN — Union Local had just scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to chase St. Clairsville starter Caleb Keenan and seize momentum it hadn’t had since the early innings.
The Red Devils were unfazed.
St. Clairsville proceeded to score 10 runs over the course of their final two at-bats to blow the game open and go on for a 16-5 win at cold and windy Union Local High School.

St. Clairsville junior Mason Myers prepares to fist bump head coach Tom Sliva after he connected on a 3-run home run in the third inning. Myers was a double short of the cycle of drove in five runs.
“Responding after the other team scores is something you definitely want to see your team do,” St. Clairsville head coach Tom Sliva said. “We talk about extending the lead, shutting (a team) down and that’s what we did. We extended the lead when it felt like (Union Local) had some momentum in their dugout. I give our kids credit.”
St. Clairsville, which is now 3-0 entering today’s scheduled day off, continues to assault opponents pitching. The Red Devils pounded out 20 hits against three Jets’ pitchers and had only one spot in the batting order that didn’t have at least one hit.
“We worked really hard at (our hitting) before the game and it paid off,” Sliva said. “We’ll get back and work at it again because this game can be tough. I am really happy with how the kids responded.”
St. Clairsville, which spotted the Jets a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second — roared back with three in the third, all of which came on a towering, three-run home run to right by junior Mason Myers. It was just the start for Myers, who came up a double shy of the cycle, and drove in four total runs.
The Devils had stretched the lead back to 6-2 before the Jets got to a tiring Keenan for three. Keenan, who was credited with the win, was solid on the bump with three strikeouts. Dylan Higgenbotham had an RBI single and catcher Evan White drove in a run with a sacrifice fly off of reliever Noah Turley.
From there, however, it was all Red Devils.
“We have to get better and that’s squarely on my shoulders,” first-year UL head coach Jim Hess said. “We had runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, but couldn’t get anyone home. I know it sounds crazy when it was 16-5, but if we’re able to get a few of those runs, it could shift the pressure and it might be a different game. We just have to get better.”
In the decisive sixth, the Red Devils sent 13 to the plate, pounded out seven hits, took advantage of three Jets’ errors, a balk and even a momentary delay as significant winds blew through the ballpark.
In that half inning, junior Marcus Bush had a two-run double, Myers singled home a run and Max Fogle drove in two runs with a single.
Along with those hitters, Turley, who earned the save by working the final three frames, had four more hits and drove in a run. Mickey Balgo had three singles and drove in two and Zach Vickers had a double, two singles and drove in two. Braylen Blomquist had three more hits, including a double.
Union Local, which is back in action today against John Marshall in a game that was pushed up 24 hours to beat weather issues, received a triple from Peyton Causby. Alex Moore had a RBI single. Clay Akers had two singles, while Braylon Akers had a double and Drake Ault drove in a run with a single.
