Bordas & Bordas Am set for June 10 and 11
WHEELING — One of the Ohio Valley and the state of West Virginia’s oldest golf tournaments is quickly approaching.
The Bordas & Bordas Amateur Golf Classic will be held at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course on June 10 and 11.
The proceeds of the event benefit the Oglebay Foundation, which uses the money for its “Access to the Parks” project. That program allows underpriveged kids to use both Oglebay and Wheeling Park for free.
“We’re super proud of the Bordas name being associated with this tournament,” Bordas & Bordas representative Scott Blass said. “We give a $10,000 check to Oglebay Foundation each year from the proceeds of this tournament. We can’t thank our loyal sponsors enough.”
The tournament, which is in its fifth year under the Bordas & Bordas sponsorship, actually started in the late 1920s. It’s changed sponsorships a handful of times.
From 1945 until 1999, the event was called the Bernhardt’s. In 2000, until 2006, Welty Buick served as the title sponsor and then Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal were the chief sponsor from 2007 until 2018.
Along with the medal and best-ball divisions, the tournament will once again feature a senior and junior division. The champion of the junior division, which is open to players aged 18 and younger, will receive the John B. Wilson Memorial Trophy.
Expected to return to seek his third consecutive title will be Howie Peterson IV. He will try to become the first three-peat winner of the event under the current name.
“To possibly be the first to three-peat is an amazing feeling,” Peterson IV said in a release. “It’s great to win such a prestigious tournament back-to-back, but to have a chance at a third in a row is amazing.”
All told, last year’s event attracted 188 players, which was a record. Peterson, despite shooting rounds of 64 and 62, still had his hands full. He fended off Bryan Myers, who is a two-time champion in the event, by a shot.
The Best Ball title went to Marshall University player Ryan Bilby and Fairmont State’s Cole Tegano. They teamed for a 20-under round. They were a shot better than Robert Morris University golfers Kyle Grube and Chase Miller.
Wheeling resident Bob Clark won the senior division championship at 2-under. He was three shots better than George Templin, who checked in at plus one. Clark and West Liberty football coach Roger Waialae joined forces to win the senior best ball.
Wheeling Park’s Campbell Koegler was the junior champion by a shot over Wheeling Central senior Justin Doerr.
Tournament officials are expecting that no fewer than seven former champions are in the field.
Thadd Obecny II, who is the golf coach at West Liberty University, set the course record in 2019 when he posted a round of 59 en route to winning the championship.
“Crispin is such a fun course to play this legendary tournament (on),” Blass said. “It’s a player-friendly course and the birdies fly. It’s fun to watch and a lot of different golfers can win.”
