Shamrocks travel for test against unbeaten Caldwell

CALDWELL — It will be a ‘meetin’ of the unbeatens’ Friday night at the Noble County Fairgrounds when the Shamrocks (6-0) and Redskins (6-0) lock horns. Barnesville is ranked 7th in the latest Ohio Division V, Region 19 poll, while Caldwell is second in Division VII, Region 27.

Barnesville is averaging a whopping 48 points a game while only giving up a mere 4.8.

The defense has logged three shutouts thus far. Quarterback Casey Carpenter has enjoyed a fine first season at the helm. The lefty has passed for 1,004 yards and 14 TDs without throwing a pick. He is 52 of 78. Luke Detling (21-352-4tds) and Duker Castello (16-354-3tds) are his primary targets, but tailback Taison Starr and tight end Bradey McIntire are viable threats, as well. Starr (52-385-7tds) and Trey Toliver (52-391-6tds) power the ground game.

Placekicker Evan Lough has scored 28 points on 22 PATs and a pair of field goals.

The Shamrocks have now won 22 consecutive regular-season games.

Caldwell is led by quarterback Cale Bender who has completed 86 of 120 attempts for 1,432 yards and 20 touchdowns. He has thrown two interceptions. Wideout Alex Herlan has caught 28 aerials for 511 yards and nine TDs. Dylan Wheeler has landed 26 passes for 437 yards and five scores. Ethan Crock has 25 receptions for 365 yards and five six-pointers.

Wheeler has 66 points on 11 touchdowns.

The Redskins are averaging 39.5 points and giving up just 13.5.

Steubenville at

Wheeling Park

MORGANTOWN — If a team ever needs a win, it is Wheeling Park. However, it won’t be easy Friday night when the Patriots (2-2) head to Pony Lewis Field at Morgantown High School to meet the WVSSAC Class AAA top-ranked Mohigans (4-0).

Wheeling Park, which is 18th in the latest rankings, is riding a two-game losing streak after starting out 2-0. It beat Hedgesville (56-0) and Brashear, Pa. (49-8) before losing to University (17-14) and Steubenville (42-28). Meanwhile, Morgantown rolled past South Charleston (65-0); nipped Bridgeport, W.Va. (22-14) and Musselman (10-6) before routing Buckhannon-Upshur (56-3).

The Patriots have been led by quarterback Aiden Davis who has completed 61 of 84 attempts for 960 yards and 10 touchdowns without an interception. His favorite targets are Mykel Johnson (14-296-4tds); Jerome Maynard (11-100-td), Amare Johnson (10-137-td) and Brennan Wack (10-107). Johnson is the leading rusher (32-316-6tds).

St. Clairsville at Bellaire

BELLAIRE — This is a matchup of two teams with playoff aspirations when they clash at noon Saturday at Nelson Field in Buckeye 8 action

The Red Devils are on a five-game winning streak and ranked fourth in Ohio Division IV, Region 15. They are averaging a whopping 45.8 points and yielding 16.8. Their lone loss, a 42-40 shootout to still undefeated Canton South, came in the season opener on the road. They rolled by Martins Ferry (54-0), Zanesville (48-7) and Wheeling Central (60-24) before slipping past Indian Valley (24-20). They routed Harrison Central (49-8) last week.

The Big Reds, meanwhile, dropped their first three games of the season to teams that are an eye-popping 17-1, with Garaway and Barnesville still perfect. They have won three straight against Shadyside (42-12), Cambridge (64-39) and Indian Creek (33-0) which are a combined 3-15. They are ranked sixth in Division VI, Region 23.

St. Clairsville is led by its powerful offensive line and running back Dino Burk who has carried the leather 93 times for 809 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff to the house last week from 75 yards and has scored 102 points so far. Gavin Schoolcraft is also a viable option in the backfield.

Quarterback Brady Schafer has enjoyed a fine first season under center. He has completed 43 of 64 attempts for 788 yards and eight touchdowns, compared to two picks. His prime target is Cole Thoburn (17-321-4tds).

Bellaire has relied on the strong running game of Drew White (59-420-4tds). Mac Mac Pettigrew is a threat to go the distance at any time whether it be on a run, catching a pass (17-306-4tds) or returning a punt or kickoff. Quarterback Luke Heatherington has 33 completions on 64 attempts for 559 yards and half-a-dozen touchdowns. However, he has been picked off nine times.

Maret DC at Wheeling Central

WHEELING – The Maroon Knights (2-3) have had a rollercoaster of a season so far, alternating losses and wins. They fell 36-17 to USO, Pa., last week.

Wheeling Central sits in 27th place in the latest WVSSAC Class A rankings.

Braden McWreath leads the Maroon Knights with 634 yards and five TDs on 65 carries. He is also the leading receiver with 21 receptions for 680 yards and six TDs.Quarterback Seth Cover has passed for 686 yards and eight touchdowns on 46 of 77 accuracy. He has thrown a trio of INTs. Placekicker Eli Tucker has booted 11 PATs and four field goals for 23 points.

The Frogs (4-0) have scored 172 points while giving up 58. They routed Phelps (DC) last week, 42-6.

The game will start at 11 a.m. at Bishop Schmitt Field on the campus of Wheeling University.

In other games of interest tonight with 7 p.m. kickoffs, Union Local (3-2) heads west on I-70 to McFarland Stadium to meet Cambridge (0-6); Weir (4-1) welcomes Keyser (3-1) to Jimmy Carey Stadium; River (3-2) ventures north on Ohio 7 to meet rival Shadyside (2-4) at Fleming Field; Tyler Consolidated (4-0) travels to New Martinsville to face Magnolia (0-4) on Alumni Field at Bill Stewart Stadium; Buckeye Local (1-5) hosts Toronto (5-1) at World War II Memorial Stadium in Yorkville; Van (1-4) journeys to Paden City (3-1); Harrison Central (4-2) entertains Indian Creek (1-5) at Wagner Field in Cadiz; Valley (4-1) hosts South Harrison (1-3) at Thomas C. West Field in Pine Grove; Martins Ferry (4-2) treks to Sugar Grove Berne Union (2-4); Edison (5-1) visits East Liverpool (4-2); Monroe Central (3-3) hosts Shenandoah (3-3) at Monroe Park; and Conotton Valley (3-3) welcomes Frontier (0-6) to Bowerston.

Two games have 7:30 kick offs as Brooke (3-2) hosts Bridgeport, W.Va. (4-1) on Paul Billiard Field at Brooke Memorial Stadium in Wellsburg and Robert C. Byrd (0-4) visits the northern panhandle to play Oak Glen (1-4) in New Manchester.

On Saturday, John Marshall (0-5) travels to Vincent, Oh., to face Warren Local (2-4) at noon. Steubenville Catholic (6-0) welcomes Carrick, Pa. (0-5) to Reno Field inside Harding Stadium at 7.
