Annual Wheeling Park duals kicks off
TRIADELPHIA — Wheeling Park has wrestled short-handed for most of the early season due to injuries and other reasons, but the Patriots had a couple of additions to the roster Saturday during Day 1 of the 35th annual Wheeling Park Duals inside the fieldhouse at The Highlands Sports Complex.
Although it is not at full strength yet, Wheeling Park went 3-1 to set itself up for Day 2. After dropping their first dual of the day to Herbert Hoover, 36-35, the Patriots rallied to defeat John Glenn, 34-31; Indian Creek, 53-24; and Bethel Tate, 53-14.
They will face Garaway today at 10:15 a.m.
“It’s a lot of fun to have some of those guys back. It makes us more competitive,” first-year Wheeling Park head coach Danny Doyle said. “We’re not all the way back yet, but it sure helps to get a couple guys back in the lineup today to boost morale.”
Four Patriots were perfect in their four matches, those being Jacob Carman (132), Isaac Sands (165), Noah White (175) and Jameson Maynard (190/215). Carman secured three technical falls and a forfeit, while Sands had a pair of pins and two decisions. White recorded a trio of pins and a technical fall, while Maynard had three pins and a forfeit.
“We didn’t know whether Noah was ever going to wrestle again,” Doyle admitted. “He looked very good today. Jacob Carman is probably wrestling the best he has since coming to Wheeling Park.”
The Patriots are still without reigning OVAC Ron Mauck 190-pound champion Malaki Washington, but, according to Doyle, he should be back for the OVACs. He is recovering from a knee injury.
Steubenville was perfect in its four duals. Big Red toppled defending champion Peters Township, 37-33; Shenandoah, 78-3; Canfield, 47-31; and Loveland, 42-30.
Dorian Haddad (126), Cooper Smith (144) Brody Saccoccia (157), Ethan Llewellyn (165) and Landon Crosier (175) all went 4-0.
Saccoccia is a defending Ohio Division II state champion and a three-time all-Ohioan. He is also the defending OVAC Ron Mauck titlist. Smith is a returning state placer and OVAC Ron Mauck champion.
John Marshall also went 3-1 with wins over Fairmont Senior (45-29); Canal Fulton Northwest (54-27) and Beckley Woodrow Wilson (40-31). The Monarchs fell to Massillon Washington (39-36).
Carter Adkins (132), Waylong Wyckoff (150), Brooks Harrison (165) and Maverick Lemasters (175) were all a perfect 4-0.
Action gets underway today at 9 a.m.
