Ferry falls in first shot clock game; Vincent leads Bulldogs past Edison

CANTON — Martins Ferry fell to Indian Valley 75-56 on Friday inside the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse in the first-ever high school game played with a shot clock approved by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association.

The game was doubly historic as Alex Reese became Martins Ferry’s all-time scorer in boys’ basketball at the event.

Reese netted 24 points in the loss to Indian Valley, eclipsing the old mark of 1,338 set by Ron ‘Cy’ Godfrey in 1956. The Youngstown State University football recruit now has 1,354 career points.

Reese evenly split his points with 12 in each half.

Eli Smith followed with 11 points for Martins Ferry, while Gavin Little, Maurice Barnett and Tev’n Williams each had seven.

Colt James led Indian Valley with 18 points.

Bridgeport 65, Edison 49

TORONTO — Jaleel Vincent netted 34 points as the Bulldogs posted a repeat victory over the Wildcats during the Todd Kalivoda Classic inside the George Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.

Jaki Threet added 13 points.

Jackson McBane had 25 for Edison. Kyle Long added 18.

The boys from Belmont County outscored the Wildcats, 17-10, in the third to extend their advantage to 53-39 entering the fourth. The victors outscored the Jefferson Countians, 13-10, in the fourth to account for the final score.

Edison pulled to within 54-47, but that was as close as the Silver-and-Black was able to get as Bridgeport responded with an 8-0 spurt to increase its advantage up to 62-47.

McBane and Vincent were named the MVPs of their respective teams.

Toronto, 65, Waynesburg Central 50

TORONTO — Toronto netted the first eight points and did not look back as the Red Knights defeated the Raiders, 65-50, in the fourth game of the first day of the 5th Annual Todd Kalivoda Holiday Classic Friday night inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.

Three players produced double digits in points to lead the way offensively for Toronto. Individually, Austin Buchanan netted a game-high 20 points, Brady Fair delivered 15 and Aiden Filby finished with 14.

Alex VanSickle collected a team-high 18 points to lead the way offensively for Waynesburg Central.

The Red-and-White took an 8-0 lead, and the hosts led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. The victors built a double-digit advantage in the second as the lead grew to 23-9. Toronto led 27-17 at halftime.

The Red Knights outscored the Raiders, 18-12, in the third to increase their advantage to 45-29 entering the fourth. The home team outscored the visitors, 20-11, in the fourth to account for the final score.

Buchanan and VanSickle were named the MVPs of their respective teams.

Toronto is scheduled to play Weir in the final game of the showcase at 8 p.m. tonight at home.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Martins Ferry 63, Liberty Union 47

MARIETTA — The Purple Riders raced to a 37-20 lead at the half in rolling past the Lions during the River City Classic at Marietta College.

Lindsey Best led three players in double figures for Martins Ferry with 18 points. Giana Chirpas added 13 and Maddie Lucas 12.

River City Classic

Monroe Central 59, Warren Local 48

MARIETTA — Jacob Fogle scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter to lead the Seminoles over the Warriors. He knocked down four treys as Monroe Central pulled away with a 23-16 scoring advantage.

Chance Allen and Tucker Howell each netted 14. Corbin Farnsworth added seven.
