Monroe Central holds off Barnesville 49-44

WOODSFIELD — Monroe Central led 20-13 at the half and held off visiting Barnesville, 49-44, Thursday night in girls’ basketball action on Junior Winland Court.

Both teams netted 14 points in the third quarter before the Shamrocks made it close.

Mayzie Emery had a game-high 18 points for Monroe Central (9-4). She also charted five steals.

Brylee McFrederick added 11 points for the Seminoles. Jadyn Miller finished with nine points, six rebounds, four steals and a similar number of assists.

Lydia Welch had 14 points for Barnesville. Madelynn Tyson added 11 and Aiva Leasure nine.

John Marshall 52, Steubenville 47

MOUNDSVILLE — Kaylee White scored 19 points and Rilee Storm added 17 as the Monarchs pulled away from Big Red in the fourth quarter.

John Marshall led 30-23 at the half but Steubenville pulled to within 37-36 at the end of three quarters. However, a 15-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter sealed the deal.

Steubenville’s Nyla McShan led all scorers with 31.

Bellaire 51, Cambridge 28

CAMBRIDGE — Zara Harveth recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Big Reds (11-1) continued their red-hot play. Harveth also dished out five assists.

Eliana Mason added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tamya Morgan had nine points and Rhyan O’Grady seven points and eight rebounds.

Shadyside 45, Buckeye Local 38

SHADYSIDE — Kaci Tsoras poured in 21 points and Giovanna Hines added 13 as the Tigers defeated the host Panthers. Tsoras knocked down four treys among her total.

Alyssa Dailey led Buckeye Local with 16 points. Sammi Westfall added seven.

River 57, Caldwell 33

CALDWELL — Coach Rick Isaly’s Lady Pilots (6-6) used a strong second half to earn a key OVAC 2A repeat win in Noble County.

Senior Reese Hobbs led the winners with 18 points, including 12 in the second half, while classmate Kaylee Hagan (13) drilled a trio of bonus bombs. Freshman Maci Isaly (12) reached double figures for River and junior Zoey Fox added seven points and six rebounds.

River led 12-5, 20-13 and 41-25 at the quarter calls.

Breighlee Maracco led Caldwell (3-9) with 13 points.

East Liverpool 47,

Harrison Central 32

CADIZ — The Huskies continued their slide with a home loss to the Potters.

Mikayla Pelegreen knocked down 11 points to pace Harrison Central (8-5). Lauren Doane added eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Monroe Central 54, River 15

HANNIBAL — The visiting Seminoles broke out to a 24-4 lead after one quarter before putting it on cruise control in thumping the Pilots inside the R.L. Potts Gymnasium.

Chance Allen and Tucker Howell evenly split two dozen points between them. Nine Monroe Central players scored at least one points and eight different players had at least one bonus goal.

Steubenville Catholic 53,

Bridgeport 36

STEUBENVILLE — Benji Rook stands alone atop the Steubenville Catholic leaderboard.

Rook recorded a basket with 3:29 left in the fourth quarter to give Steubenville Catholic a 53-36 lead against Bridgeport. The basket gave Rook 1,079 points for his career enabling him to become Steubenville Catholic’s all-time leading scorer.

Rook added another basket as the Crusaders went on to tame the Bulldogs, 59-36, in a boys’ basketball game Thursday night inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.

The Blue-and-Gold built a 25-6 lead at the end of the first forcing the boys from Belmont County to play catch up the rest of the way.

The boys in blue outscored the hosts, 12-5, in the second quarter to close to within 30-18 at halftime. Both teams scored 16 points in the third as the victors took a 46-34 lead into the fourth. Rook recorded a game-high 19 points to lead the way for the boys from Jefferson County. Also, Camden Bradley delivered 11 points, while Timmy Mihalyo and Tommy Pergi each tallied nine.

Jaleel Vincent collected a team-high 15 points to lead the way for Bridgeport, while Coen Brinker contributed nine and Jaki Threet tallied eight.

Jefferson County Christian 58,

Cornerstone Prep 50

WEIRTON — In a see-saw affair, Jefferson County Christian outlasted Cornerstone Prep on Thursday inside the Millsop Center.

Mark Jenkins led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds. Lee Gump added 17 points and Wyatt Hervey had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Royals move to 5-3 on the season.

SWIMMING

Barnesville Sweeps Milk Truck

WHEELING — The Shamrocks defeated Union Local in both the boys’ and girls’ portions of a swim meet at Linsly. They won 61-41 in boys and 91-47 in girls.

Barnesville’s Liv McCrate captured two individual first-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke.

Linsly’s Greta Temporin won the 500 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke, while the Cadets’ Riccardo Piccini swam to titles in the 50 and 100 Freestyles.

In boys’ action, Linsly defeated Cambridge 121-5; Union Local 117-28 and Barnesville 103-42. Barnesville topped Cambridge 62-7 and UnIon Local beat the Bobcats 58-7.

On the girls’ side, Linsly defeated Cambridge 119-7; Union Local 115-34 and Barnesville 96-55. Union Local swam past Cambridge 87-16 and Barnesville won 96-9 over Cambridge.
