Monroe Central outlasts Wheeling Central
WOODSFIELD — Trailing 17-13 after one quarter, homestanding Monroe Central outscored Wheeling Central, 14-5, in the pivotal second quarter and slowly pulled away for a 63-47 boys’ basketball victory Friday night on Junior Winland Court.
Tucker Howell netted 22 points and Chancer Allen had 10 of his 18 in the fourth quarter to keep the Maroon Knights (5-1) at bay.
Monroe Central (8-1) avenged its lone loss of the season — a 53-44 nod in the Sam Andy Classic back in December. The Seminoles have won five straight since.
Wheeling Centreal’s Eli Sancomb paced all scorers with 25, which included five treys. Tyler Dean added nine and Troy Anthony eight.
The teams entered the game ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the OVAC Class 3A division.

MORRISTOWN — The Jets posted a repeat victory over the Big Reds Friday night inside “The Hangar” on the Union Local campus.
Union Local rallied from a 37-31 halftime deficit to take a 49-45 lead entering the fourth quarter before Brandon Mehl tallied eight of his 10 points in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Dre Saunders paced all scorers in the game with 22 for Union Local, 14 coming in the middle two quarters. Bill Schumacher chipped in 12, one more than Brody Gregor.
Raekwon Pettigrew led the Big Reds with 20 points. Keegan Davis donated 13 and Caleb Jewell 10.
The win by Union Local helps them stay in the OVAC Class 3A race.

Indian Creek Sweeps Quad
STEUBENVILLE — The Redskins went 4-0 in both boys and girls action inside the Big Red Natatorium.
In boys action, Indian Creek defeated Martins Ferry (133-59); Edison (130-85); Steubenville (139.5-55.5) and Steubenville Catholic (128-45).
In girls action, Indian Creek swam past Martins Ferry (136-102); Steubenville Catholic (194-28); Steubenville (141-123) and Edison 160-95).
Only one individual was a two-time winner, that being Martins Ferry sophomore Myah Schultz who won the 100 Breaststroke and 50 Freestyle.
