OVAC Girls Basketball tournament pairings announced
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The semifinal pairings have been announced for the OVAC WVU Medicine Girls Basketball Championships, which are set for Monday night at the higher seeded schools.
Securing the top seeds in each of the five classes and hosting semifinal contests are Morgantown (5A), Harrison Central (4A), Wheeling Central (3A), Steubenville Catholic (2A) and Frontier (1A).
The Mohigans (10-2) will host city rival No. 4 University (8-5) in the rubber game of their season series thus far. Second-seeded Steubenville (12-5) welcomes No. 3 and defending champion Wheeling Park (9-5) to the Crimson Center.
The Patriots won the prior meeting this year.
In Class 4A, the Huskies (14-5) entertain rival No. 4 and defending champion Indian Creek (10-8). The other semifinal has No. 2 Edison (14-4) hosting No. 3 Oak Glen (9-5).
A new champion is assured in Class 3A as Martins Ferry failed to qualify.
Top-seeded Wheeling Central (12-1) welcomes No. 4 Bellaire (15-3) to East Wheeling while No. 3 Fort Frye (14-3) heads to ‘The Hangar’ in Morristown to meet No. 2 Union Local (16-3).
The Class 2A field has No. 1 Steubenville Catholic (10-6) awaiting Jefferson County rival No. 4 Toronto (8-9). The other half of the bracket has defending champion and No. 2 River (11-7) hosting third-seeded Southern Local (11-7).
No. 2 Cameron (7-3) is seeking an unprecedented fifth straight Class 1A championship when it hosts OVAC newcomer and No. 3 Heartland Christian (9-6). No. 1 Frontier (10-5) welcomes No. 4 Madonna (6-8).
All games begin at 6 p.m. with JV action.
The two winners in each class will meet on Saturday, Feb. 8 with starting times yet to be determined by OVAC officials.
All games will be played inside the ECO Center.
Consolation games will also be played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
