Semifinals set after day two of OVAC championships

WHEELING — The stage is set for the championship round after an action-packed day two of the 71st Annual Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Championships on Friday night inside WesBanco Arena.

After the dust settled on the penultimate day, Cameron led Class 1A/2A with 80 points to second-place Caldwell’s 47.5, Barnesville led Class 3A with 113 points to second place Linsly’s 68, Beaver Local led Class 4A with 120.5 points to second-place Oak Glen’s 90.5, and University led Class 5A with 160.5 points to second-place Parkersburg South’s 127.

All the top-seeds in each weight class are set to compete in semi-final bouts on Saturday, though there were a few notable upsets on Friday.

Outside the top five seeds, Buckeye Local six-seed Nathan Dentz defeated Wheeling Park’s Bodie Cox via pin at 106. He will face Beaver Local two-seed Justuce Fisher of Beaver Local in a semi final Saturday.

Cambridge’s Noah Keen, the seven-seed, made it to Saturday’s semi-finals at 132 by defeating two-seed Ethan Starr from Cambride by pin. He will face University three-seed Nico Maisel for a spot in the championship.

Cambridge’s Owen Hunt, the 12-seed at 150, was the underdog against both John Marshall five-seed Waylong Wyckoff and Indian Creek four-seed Ian Starkey, but managed to advance via pin and 6-1 decision, respectively, to make it to the semifinal against top-seeded Slaton Pettit from Cameron on Saturday.

Oak Glen’s Greg Sauers made it to the 190 semifinals as the sixth-seed, upsetting Wheeling Central three-seed Wyatt Brady in sudden victory in the quarterfinals. He will face Southern Local second-seed Johnny Bailey in one leg of the semis.

University six-seed Jackson Pate and Harrison Central seven-seed Knox McKibben each scored upset victories to meet each other in the semi-finals at 215.

University has the largest contingent of semi-finalists with nine: Pepper Martin (113), Colton Gillespie (126), Nico Maisel (132), Carter Pauley (144), Rider Ludrosky (157), Brody Kehler (165), Emerson Murphy (175), Jackson Pate (215), and Brock Kehler (285).

Oak Glen has five semi-finalists: Aiden Anderson (113), Wyatt Wolanski (132), Hayden Lamb (144), Greg Sauers (160) and Noah Schmidt (285). Steubenville and Wheeling Park each have four: Cole Harvey (113), Dorian Haddad (126), Cooper Smith (144) and Brody Saccoccia (150) for Steubenville, and Jack Lowe (150), Isaac Sands (165), Noah White (175), and Jameson Maynard (190) for Wheeling Park.

Five wrestlers are making another run at the title after winning gold last year- University’s Pepper Martin, Barnesville’s Colt Carpenter, Steubenville’s Cooper Smith, Steubenville’s Brody Saccoccia, and University’s Brock Kehler.

Beaver Local’s Justuce Fisher, East Liverpool’s Tristan Eckles, University’s Colton Gillespie, Cameron’s Slaton Pettit, Barnesville’s Ayden King, Wheeling Park’s Jameson Maynard, Wheeling Central’s Isaac Martin, and Harrison Central’s Landen Thomas are back in the final four after each were runner-ups last year.

Action is set to resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the semi-finals and consolation matches, with the championship finals, third, fifth and seventh-place matches kicking off at 4 p.m.
