St. C swim teams take gold at Buckeye 8 championships
WELLSBURG — The good times kept coming for the St. Clairsville Red Devils on Thursday as they swept the 2025 Buckeye 8 Athletic League Swimming Championships, with boys and girls teams both winning first place at the meet, which took place inside Brooke High School.
The St. Clairsville girls had 92 team points to sit atop the team rankings, with Brooke coming in second.
The Red Devil boys finished with 73 points to narrowly beat out Beaver Local’s 70 in the team rankings.
St. Clairsville had first-place finishers in eight events.
Their girls 200 yard medley relay team of Ryah Newell, Claire Daubenmeyer, Adrienne Lowe and Isabelle Morgan came in first, as did their boys 400 yard freestyle relay team of Zach May, Luke Stack, Caden Blacker and Brayden Kralovic. St. C.’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Zach May, Luke Stack, Brayden Kralovic and Caden Blacker set a new meet record in winning their event, completing the relay in 1:36.23
Individually, Zach May’s day only got better. He set a new meet record in the 200 yard freestyle, taking first place with a 1:46.79, and a new meet record in the 100 yard butterfly, taking the gold with a time of 52.87 seconds.
Brayden Kralovic took first place in the 500 yard freestyle.
On the girls’ side, Adrienne Lowe had two first-place finishes, in the 100 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle.
Brooke’s Faith Farrell got in the record books with a new meet-best in the 50 freestyle, swimming it in 25.89 seconds. She also finished first in the 100 yard freestyle
The Bruins’ Kiersten Harvath took first place in the girls 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke.
Brooke’s girls team had first-place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Kiersten Harvath, Lyla Horvath, Lindsey Kettler and Faith Farrell getting it done, and in the 400 yard freestyle relay with the team of Gwen Hill, Lyal Horvath, Kiersten Harvath and Faith Farrell.
Barnesville’s Liv McCrate took first place in the girls 200 yard IM and 100 yard breaststroke.
On the boys side, the Shamrocks’ Levi Geiger won the 50 yard freestyle and Antoni Schuerle won the 100 yard breaststroke.
Beaver Local’s Cole Long set a new meet record in the boys 200 yard IM with a 2:00.01.
Martins Ferry’s girls 200 yard medley relay team of Maleigha Schultz, Myah Schultz, Morgan Bintz and Andrea Olivero-Rodriguez took second place. Myah Schultz also took second place in the girls 50 yard freestyle.
St. Clairsville had second-place finishes in the boys 200 yard IM by Brayden Kralovic, in the boys 50 yard freestyle and boys 100 yard breaststroke by Caden Blacker, in the girls 100 yard freestyle and girls 100 yard breaststroke by Claire Daubenmeyer, and lastly in the girls 100 yard backstroke by Ryah Newell.
St. C.’s girls 400 yard freestyle relay team of Adrienne Lowe, Ryah Newell, Lucinda Banks and Claire Daubenmeyer also took second place.
Barnesville’s boys 200 yard medley relay team of Levi Geiger, Antoni Schuerle, Maddox Whaley and Conner Starr came in second place, as did their boys 200 yard freestyle relay team of Antoni Schuerle, Conner Starr, Maddox Whaley and Levi Geiger.
Brooke’s Lyla Horvath was the second-place finisher in the girls 200 yard freestyle and the girls 500 yard freestyle. Ryan Kettler came in second in the boys 500 yard freestyle. Owen Haught finished second in the boys 100 yard freestyle.
Yet more high-stakes meets are on the horizon, with the W.Va. Region 1 Meet taking place on Jan. 8 at Brooke, and an Ohio sectionals meet taking place that same day in Steubenville.
