Union Local takes title at Tornado Classic

ZANESVILLE — With three individual champions, Union Local captured the team title at the West Muskingum Tornado Classic wrestling tournament Saturday. The Jets piled up 239 points, which was 26.5 better than second-place Martins Ferry.

Gamble Gossett (120), Gunnar Gossett (150) and Brody Perzanowski (175) all ruled their respective weight classes. Gamble Gossett won by major decision (15-3) over Bridgeport’s Robert Weekley, while Gunnar Gossett and Perzanowski both posted decisions.

Buckeye Local’s Nathan Dentz (106) pinned Martins Ferry’s Charles Thompson in his finals match, while the Bulldogs’ Ax’Zavior Sanchez (132) scored a major decision over the Purple Riders’ Silas Thompson.

Edison prevails

in Shadyside

SHADYSIDE — The Wildcats won the Last Man Standing Tournament inside the Tigers Den with 212 points. They also had champions in Gage Hennis (126), Nolan Haught (138) and Cole Pittman (165). Pittman was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Barnesville was second with 158 points and a pair of titlists in Conner Wilson (113) and Brayden Trigg (144).

Toronto also had three champions as Caden McGrath (150), Drake Bouscher (157) and Heath Thomas (285) all prevailed.

Bellaire’s Grant Vasey (120) and Steubenville’s Cedric Peckens (106) round out the local winners.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bridgeport 70,

Magnolia 49

BRIDGEPORT — The Bulldogs exacted some revenge against the visiting Blue Eagles on Frank Baxter Court inside the John J. Havlicek Gymnasium. Magnolia won earlier this season in New Martinsville.

Jaleel Vincent continued his sparkling season with a game-high 29 points for Bridgeport. Jaki Threet chipped in 16 and Lyrick Brown finished with nine.

Kingston Christen led Magnolia with 10 points. Dubale Greathouse and Nash Hood each had nine and Darin Shimp eight.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Frontier 58,

Shadyside 45

BEAVERTON — The visiting Cougars outscored the Tigers 37-24 in the middle two quarters en route to their victory.

Kaci Tsoras led Shadyside with 21 points. Layla Samsa added 13 and Giovanna Hines nine.

Wheeling Park 52, Steubenville 41

STEUBENVILLE — The Patriots scored a road win on Saturday behind 29 points from senior Alexis Bordas.

Bordas added five rebounds and a pair of steals. She went 10-10 from the foul line and made three 3-pointers. Maggie Hupp followed with seven points and seven rebounds, while Kaylee Hunt grabbed 10 rebounds.
