High School Roundup: Seminoles Fall In Sectionals; Park Suffers Road Loss
WOODSFIELD – It wasn’t the start to the postseason that Monroe Central was looking for Saturday in Ohio Division VI East 1 Girls Sectional Tournament basketball action.
The third-seeded Seminoles (14-9) dropped a hard-fought, 54-49, decision to visiting No. 4 Ridgewood on Junior Winland Court as Kathryn Kelley knocked down six triples en route to a game-leading 23 points for the Generals.
Mayzie Emery led Monroe Central with 15 points. Jadyn Miller had 13, including a trio of treys. Karsyn Muncy had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Ridgewood will now face No. 2 Bellaire on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. at Cambridge High School.
Nitro 68, Wheeling park 57
NITRO – The Wildcats defeated the visiting Patriots despite a 42-point performance from Park senior Alexis Bordas.
Bordas also recorded nine rebounds and four steals.
Maggie Hupp scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds for Wheeling Park.
Nitor, the No. 1 Class AAA team in the W.Va. high school poll, moves to 16-3 on the season, while Wheeling Park, No. 3 in Class AAAA in the same poll, moves to 12-8.
Wheeling Park’s final regular season game is at Parkersburg South on Feb. 24.
WRESTLING
Caldwell Wins M-OVL Championship
CALDWELL – The Redskins won seven of the 13 weight classes and cruised to the Mid-Ohio Valley League championship Saturday in Noble County.
Jesse Pemberton (106), Brody Chandler (144),Owen Hunt (150), 157 – Adan Bender (157), Samuel Pierce (165), Donnie Pierce (190) and Blake Williams (215) were Caldwell’s titlists.
Shadyside had three champs in Josiah Green (126), Jaycob Trigg (132) and Eli Gallagher (138), while Monroe Central’s Gavin Bennett (120); River’s Tyler Winkler (175) and Shenandoah’s Carson Cline (285) round out the winners.
There was no 113 pound division.
