Steubenville finishes fourth in state duals
COLUMBUS — Steubenville finished fourth in the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division II state dual meet tournament Saturday at Bishop Watterson High School.
After defeating Perry, 39-25, in the quarterfinals, Big Red fell to eventual champion Buckeye, 33-31, in the semifinals. In the third-fourth place match, Steubenville dropped a 42-33 decision to Bishop Watterson.
Defending state champion and top-ranked Brody Saccoccia (157) led three Big Red matmen with 3-0 records on the day. The Purdue University signee recorded a pair of technical falls and a 58-second pin. Also going 3-0 were Cole Harvey (113) and Ethan Llewellyn (165). Harvey registered a major decision, pin in 1:40 and technical fall, while Llwwellyn had a pair of decisions and a pin in 1:04.
Division III
MARION — Barnesville placed sixth at Elgin High School, going 1-2.
The Shamrocks dropped their quarterfinal bout to Apple Creek Waynedale, 47-27, but bounced back to take down Liberty Center, 46-27. They fell, 43-28, to Versailles in the consolation round.
No. 1 ranked Ayden King (165) recorded three pins (2:24, 1:16 and :25) to lead three undefeated Shamrocks on the day.
Hines Ford (175) and Christien Hannahs (215) were the others. Ford had a technical fall and pins in 24 seconds and 5:58. Hannahs earned two major decisions and a decision.
W.Va. State Duals
LEWISBURG — John Marshall was sixth in the Class AAA portion of the state duals at the W.Va. State Fairgrounds.
The Monarchs lost to Beckley Woodrow Wilson, 46-24, in the quarterfinals before defeating Musselman, 56-20, in the consolation bracket. They fell to George Washington. 41-28, in the fifth-sixth place match.
Four John Marshall wrestlers went 3-0, with Waylon Wyckoff (150) earning the Monarchs’ Most Outstanding Wrestler. Others going spotless on the day were Carter Adkins (132), Kaden Harding (144) and Brooks Harrison (165).
Buckeye 8 Tournament
CONNORVILLE — Beaver Local, despite going 2-5 in the championship finals, won the 11-team event at Buckeye Local High School with 183 points. The Beavers’ Jake Hughes (157) and Evan Ours (165) were champs. However, OVAC Ron Mauck champ Bobby Buchheit (138) did not compete.
Martins Ferry finished runner up with 119.5 points and had a champion in Colton Nixon (126).
Other local champs were Union Local’s tandem of Gunnar Gossett (150) and Brody Perzanowski (175) and the Harrison Central duo of Knox McKibben (215) and Landen Thomas (285).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Wheeling Park 62,
St. Clairsville 47
WHEELING — Josh Huffman scored 19 points and JD Williams added 18 as the Patriots stunned the visiting Red Devils inside the ‘Palace on the Hill’ Saturday night.
Koleton Whitmire added 16 for Wheeling Park, which outscored St. Clairsville 31-16 in the second half to pull away.
Brady Schafer led the Red Devils with 15 points, one more than Griffin Straub. Tyson Pastor was held to nine.
Shadyside 61, Bridgeport 42
SHADYSIDE — The Tigers completed their regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs as Trenton Marling netted 26 points and Wyatt Parr added a dozen.
Bridgeport, playing without injured star Jaleel Vincent, was led by Jaki Threet with two dozen markers.
Magnolia 78, Parkersburg Catholic 67
PARKERSBURG — The Blue Eagles tallied a road win against the Crusaders on Saturday behind big scoring outings from Kingston Christen and Hunter Oates.
Christen scored a game-high 27 and Hunter Oates had 20 for Magnolia, who trailed 28-27 at halftime but turned up the heat in the second half.
Parkersburg Catholic was led by Preston Randolph with 24.
